Default Truck Doesn't Like Reverse?

My 94 hates reverse. It drives fine, but when I stick it in reverse the tired spin and I get to about 2000 RPM before it starts to move. If I stick it in 4-wheel it's a bit better, but not much. Does anyone know why? My tire tread is wearing a bit thin but that wouldn't cause that would it?

----------

At least, I believe the tires spin. It feels like they are, but for the most part the engine just revs. Any ideas? I think it might a slipping out of Reverse, and if so, is there a cheap fix for it?

I would think that if the tires are spinning, the truck would be moving, unless you were on ice.

So you're saying it is a transmission or linkage issue?

OP hasn't created a signature so nobody knows what transmission he's got. Maybe it's an automatic and the reverse band is toast, and he tranny work. Maybe he's trying to back up on ice. Maybe he's got a manual and his clutch is on it's way out, and he just noticed it by stepping on it hard in reverse on dry pavement. Who knows without the needed info found in a siggy.......

It's an aftermarket 4-speed automatic transmission. It has about 100k on it. The vehicle revs to about 2300 rpm before it gets enough power to move in reverse. I have been reading up and it looks like it is a valve that needs cleaning.

I don't know what *aftermarket* means; if it means a rebuilt A4LD (the OEM tranny to your vehicle as opposed to a real and genuine aftermarket unit meaning someone installed a non-OEM tranny)then let it be known that the A4LD was not exactly famous for being tough. The LD, that means, light duty. Good luck on the valve cleaning, do post results!

Update: I do have a rebuilt A4LD and what is causing the hesitation in reverse is a worn boost valve that needs replacing. It may also cause soft up-shifting and other performance issues if I don't fix it. The part itself is $43 but since it is transmission work I will have to take it to a shop. Getting it fixed ASAP
