Default Gearing

Hey guys, so i have a 2004 ranger 4x4 with a 4.0 and 4.10 gears. It ran great when i got and had for a while but ever since i got my new tires, (33's) my truck seems to drag going up hill and accelerating. I have an automatic so the transmission is shifting at different points of course and throwing everything off. Everywhere i have read mentions that 4.10's should be good for what i have but i feel like 4.56's might be better, or even 4.88's. Let me know if this seems wrong. Also, i want to get a mechanical locker in my truck. For a new locker would i have to get the lower gears and the locker to fit the new gears or would the locker have the gears in the whole kit? Sorry for the noob alert guys.

You realize that if the tires you added are larger in diameter than stock that you've slowed the drivetrain down, and things like the speedometer/odometer and....shift points for the tranny and TC lockup can/will be affected, right?

Yeah re-gearing would definitely help. Alot of people here recommend running 4.56 gears when running 33 in tires. Are they 33x12.5 or 10.5? And for some pretty straight forward choices concerning gears and lockers check out http://www.ringpinion.com

oh i know all that, i just figured that since i had the upgraded 4.10's that it would equal it out, it just seems alot more sluggish than it should

Sorry to hi-jack the thread but would the fact that the 285x75 tires generally weight more than 33x12 or 10 also account for possible sluggishness?

Never heard of an "upgraded 4.10" but...... if you have notably slowed the driveline down via changing (increasing) tire diameter then it the tranny will be more inclined to upshift sooner and at lower vehicle speeds than the vehicle is actually traveling. This will, of course, lower the available torque for that condition, something that wouldn't happen if it's shifting when it should. You're gonna feel that in the gas pedal and the shifting. Something to think about, and something that can be corrected via a calibration.

Something you need to also realize is with the bigger tires you are going faster than your speedo is saying. My truck when the speedo is reading 55mph by my phone and Garmin gps I am going 63mph. I have 3.0 with 3.73 gears and no problems tho.

oh i know about that, and with the shift points being off, but what i meant by " upgraded 4.10" was that it came with 4.10's rather than the 3.73's. But i'm just wondering what gear would be appropriate for 33's. Idk i'm just getting used to it

X2. Had 33 10.50s with stock 3.73 and it was sluggish. Did a 4.10 swap and thrilled with it.
