Not getting the gas cap on tight will trigger a check engine light. Remove the cap and replace making sure it is tight. If that quick check doesn't work, take it to Autozone and let them pull the codes. They should be able to tell you what they mean, if not post them here and someone will let you know.

You can replace the gas cap. Disconnect the battery and it will clear the codes. If it does not clear the code something else is wrong.

Generally takes 10-15 minutes with the battery disconnected to clear it

i was almost surprised that nobody said "silly woman" yet.lol (no offense intended)

its more than likely the gas cap, evap codes are fairly common for those issues. just un-screw it and make sure that you didnt crossthread the cap, its plastic so there's probably no need to buy a new one. just take it off and put it back on snug.

if the code doesnt clear, you can always take it by your local auto zone or advanced auto parts they'll pull the code and let you know whats really wrong or clear the code if it was the fuel cap evap issue.

Yes that is what I will do , maybe on my way to work tomorrow , kinda to busy today to hit the zone before work , but i did take off the cap and put it back on again so maybe that will solve it .

"Silly Woman" perhaps or not , I have to try to find a way to do things myself and this fourm is very helpful to me : )

let us know how it goes Elizabeth, should be the gas cap issue though like everyone is mentioning, in which case all is well and won't cost a dime!

There were two codes :
0171
0174

The Gentleman at the zone said it might be the gas cap or some other stuff , either way he cleared it so the light is off now but he said it might come back, what do yall think ?

It's hard to say exactly without knowing the codes that it popped. Do you have them written down perhaps?

What engine do you have in your truck btw?

It is a six cylinder automatic 2 wheel drive, 2005 with 32K miles on it.

Those are the codes on a receipt paper he gave me , it says all sorts of other stuff as well , all that is foreign to me .

At any rate I will be parking it for the next five or six days while I am out of town and hopefully when I get back the light will still be off when I restart it at that time. If not then I will type in word for word every single thing the receipt says on it. And all I can say is it better not come on again!!!

Thanks everyone , I have to pack : )

The gas cap was the problem thankfully , I must not have tightened it completely .
