Default AC Problems

Hi all , got a 94 ranger and ive noticed the air does kind of work but not completely , im not sure if it just needs more freon or something more

I noticed for some reason on my 2 vents in the middle the left one i cant feel anything come out but the right one i can , i put it on max ac and have the button pressed in but its not that cold and not much coming out

I know my old 92 f150 had a spot on it were i can just buy the freon from like autozone and put it in myself , do these rangers have a similiar thing and what kind of freon is it , i know the f150 was like an r 12 or something

Thanks for any help , im down here in florida and its hot everyday now , and i go on the freeway so i cant always keep the windows open

If your compressor was completely removed, then yes, you have lost all you refrigerant if it didn't get recharged when it was reinstalled. You should have R-134A because the government mandated that R-12 was banned in 1994. You should not be able to even interchange the two refrigerant in your truck because the service fittings port are different sizes for the different refrigerants.

As for recharging it with the can from a store, I really wouldn't recommend it just because there is a good possibility that it got moisture in the system and the cans can't get that out. I would take it to a reputable shop and tell them that you want the system recharged.

Well whats the biggest problem with doing it myself and buying the cans and or the kit versus paying a professional to do the job

I know i was reading more regarding the moisture and it said about it possibly causing a problem in the future , i obviously want to save money but not at the risk of causing a problem

Would you just recommend bringing it to a pro , i have used those cans before on an f 150 a long time ago and i didn't have any problems , so i assumed this would be no different

What would be the pros and cons of using the cans versus paying a professional to do the job

I have charged my ac and also had it done by a pro. One thing i can say about doing it yourself is its cheaper. However if you get it done by a pro in most cases you get a guarantee. The most important thing is making sure you have enough oil in your compressor to keep it from locking up. Also a pro has the ability to pull the vacum on your system to alow for maximum charge and to be certain their are no leaks. the leak detector you get in a can from parts place is far from foolproof. If your compressor has been removed I would recomend a pro. either that or completly drain your system and start over with the recomended oil and freon , and make sure you get a kit with a gauge because you dont want to overcharge your system either. I have screwed up ever way possible believe me its not always as simple as just charging your system especialy when you have had a componet removed. hope this helped.
But charging your ac wont increase the air coming out of your vent only the temperature

----------

Im not sure on what models they have this but, I have a 2007 ranger and my ac all but quit i could feel justa little air comin out but the motor was wide open. I thought it was one of those vacume activated openers but after basically taking the dash and fender off the truck I found the problem. Under the glove box there is a flap that opens and closes deepending on what you have the ac set on. If you turn it on reg ac the flap is closed on max ac the flap is open. with the max ac on take a flashlight and look back inside the flap there is a wire mesh filter between the fan motor and and the flap. It was completely stopped up. I used some spray cleaner I think mean green and a extended air blower on a air hose to clean it. it works like a new one.It wasnt getting any air to blow into the vents. I hope this helps someone.
