Default 1992 3.0 leaking coolant from the rear of the engine

Bought another 92 ranger with a 3.0 motor in it. Guy said it overheated one day and he didn't have the energy to fix it. Towed it home and changed the oil (black, old, no water) checked the radiator, no coolant. Replaced the thermostat and RTV'd with a new gasket. Went to fill the radiator (after a flush) and coolant immediately began pouring from the rear of the engine/transmission, can't make out where its coming from. Is it the intake gasket? Engine does start, but runs a bit rough. Any help would be appreciated.

Don't think so, its coming out of the slot between where the motor and tranny mate up. Freeze plugs are along the side of the block.

I believe there are freeze plugs in the back of the block

Well, there were two freeze plugs on the back of the engine. One had a 3mm hole in it, decided to replace all of them and put in a new throw out bearing as I don't want to take this thing apart again for a while!

Curious how these went bad - Here's a view of 15 year old engine and they look brand new (on the outside )

The ones I replaced looked new on the outside as well. I suspect that at some point someone used radiator 'stop leak' on this motor (horrible idea btw) and I think that accelerates the corrosion somehow.
