87 ranger2.9 cadillac converter
Ok. I need a few answers.
My ranger been running stupid lately
I let someone drive it today and noticed as they drove off that my muffler was glowing red
I know that's not right at all
I'm wondering if I take off the muffler and run it straight pipes from the cat how loud would it be ? What size pipe do I need to get to attach it if I do it that way?
Another thought was what about taking off the cat too and running pipes straight from there?what size adapter or pipe would I need then? How would it affect my truck ? Positive/ negative¿?¿?
Now if the muffler is causing the cat not to exhaust properly would that cause my truck to act stupid ? As in not idling and not picking up speed like its dragging and some times its like I'm not even hiting the gas because it won't accelerate properly.
As of now. The muffler has gotten so hot its actually hanging a inch from the ground so I'm taking that off in the morning to see if that's the issue.
But what if the Cadillac converter is clogged somehow? Can it clogg? I've only been a mechanic since the day I met my wife three years ago I was somewhat thrown into this face first so please don't laugh at my questions
If I don't ask I'll never know. I'm just trying to do this cheap as possible and also have a good out come

Re: 87 ranger2.9 cadillac converter
Probably the catalytic (not Cadillac) converter is probably coming apart & clogging up the muffler.

Take it to a muffler shop you trust and have them put on a new catylytic convertor and muffler.

Re: 87 ranger2.9 cadillac converter
Could I straight pipe it
I wouldn't mind the loud I like it sounding strong but I just don't want it obnoxious loud
I mean is it possible that the muffler is messed up and that's causing it to act stupid from not breathing correctly?
I know the right thing to do is go to the shop but I need to be able to do it myself cheap as possible if not free
So I really need some advice on how to do this rigging correctly I guess

Rigging correctly. Haha
To "rig it correctly" you would need to have both the cat and muffler cut out and a piece of pipe put back in place of each, welded in would be preferred. Although clamped on with muffler clamps would work also. The local parts store should have the things necessary for going about it the 2nd way.
----------
Just be prepared, it will be very loud once those two are gone. Very loud.

Get under there with a hacksaw or whatever it takes and cut the exhaust off directly in front of the cat. It will be loud, but if it runs better, and not gonna cost you a dime, and it will be loud, you can replace it after new years or whatever.

"In front of" is upstream of it. If it is clogged anyway, why would it matter ? You might need to replace it for emissions laws or to keep your computer happy. I have no idea even if your engine has a computer or what the laws in your area are.

Re: 87 ranger2.9 cadillac converter
I live in savannah ga
There's lots of super loud for no reason trucks here in GA I'm not worried about the laws I just want my truck to not act dumb
Its a 87 ranger
Would cutting it off really affect the crib computer that much ?
----------
So cut the converter off but leave the fitting? Would that make it easier to fit the straight pipe?

Re: 87 ranger2.9 cadillac converter
How do I find out what size pipe I will need to straight pipe it ? I took off the muffler now I'm waiting for the rain to stop so I can go cut the converter off
