Exclamation HELP! Idle Throttle Issue 2002 XLT 3.0L

2002 Ford Ranger XLT, V6, 3.0L 120k miles

Ok before, I begin I must say that im a beginner to all this mechanical stuff. I had my truck for years, theres no warrantee anymore and it doesnt exactly run the best anymore so I decided to start fixing things, may I also just point out that I dont have money (like everyone else today) for a mechanic whos probably just going to tell me wrong info, or just down right bullshit me (im in South FL).

So my issue is this: My throttle increase by itself im wondering what the hell is going on here. I dont apply any pressure to the gas pedal and my idle throttle goes from 1k rpm to 3k rpm, by itself, and between shifting gears. I know this has to be a common problem because the ranger my father owned did the same thing. This is also intermittent (of course). Today I pulled up to a light, stopped, and my rpms were at 3k and I wasnt moving or touching the gas pedal. It eventually goes back down to normal idling, but you hear the engine catch on something and it goes back slowly. Also I noticed that my RPMs dont decrease as fast, its slow coming back down towards idling

Now, I've cleaned the intake, with sea foam, took the throttle body off scrubbed it with a toothbrush using Carb cleaner and and made sure it worked (removed carbon build up). The problem stopped for a few weeks and now its right back to doing it all over again. I also noticed there was some slack on the throttle cable (which I think might be normal).

So im thinking a sensor has to be bad? The intake is a MAC performance air intake. the throttle body is stock.

Any light on this subject would be awesome.

Also, just for NOTE: Yesterday afternoon I cleaned the intake with sea foam for a second time, and cleaned off the sensor connections with a cleaner, and re-seated my ECU. Problem is gone for now. Will post on this tread when it happens again.

Ok its been a while since I been on here. I've replaced my IAC valve twice (second time I swapped it out because the part looked WRONG (too big?). Today 09/14/2011 I went to advanced auto and purchased a brand new idle air control valve. I swapped it out, but apparently when the A/C is running it still idles high, 2, 2.5 RPMS, should be below 1. Without the A/C running it idles normal. My check engine light is also on now, and its been on for the last few weeks. It came on when I was driving in the rain. This could however be two different issues. I went to go get my codes read and apparently the fuse is blown for the OCB II (whatever its called). To sum up, truck idles high when A/C is on. I replaced the Idle air control valve today with a brand new one, but that didnt seem to fix any of my issues. I unplugged the battery to clear the codes, check engine is off, but Im assuming it will just come right back on in another day or so (did this before). Any help would be awesome.

----------

Also... My A/C runs good, nice an cold... however its loud.. and not the air coming out the vents loud.. I mean I can hear the AC click on multiple times when im idling (at a stop).. When I pop the hood and look theres a circular metal peice that gets pulled into the pully which creates a very loud clicking noise every few seconds. what the hell is that? seems like the A/C is engaging itself.

Your A/C sounds like it needs a recharge. The compressor should only click on occationally, not constantly. No clue on the error code though, sorry.

This may be of interest:
Lawsuit claims Ford 'design defect' can cause sudden acceleration

A new lawsuit claims that nearly a decade’s worth of vehicles produced by the Ford Motor Co. suffer from a “design defect” that can make them susceptible to suddenly and unexpectedly racing out of control.

The lawsuit, filed in West Virginia federal court on behalf of 20 different owners in 14 states, is seeking class-action status that could, if approved, come to involve the owners of millions of Ford vehicles produced between 2002 and 2010.

maybe you guys need to make this a sticky

"For too long, Ford has put its own financial interests ahead of its consumers' safety," said lead attorney Adam Levitt. "We hope this lawsuit sheds light on this important situation and requires Ford to correct its ways, compensate its customers and put them first."

I had the same thing. When I pulled up to a stop, with foot on brake, the rpms would suddenly rev up so much the back wheels would spin. I took it to Ford dealer: they decarbonized the intake passages, cleaned MAF sensors, updated PCM (whatever that means), flushed fuel injectors, and I got a lube - guess where the lube job was?. Total cost $774. I will be joining the above lawsuit to see if I can get some money back.
