Default Fords 4 Cyl engine

Hello. I am looking to buy a 99-00-01 Ford ranger i have heard alot of good things about the V6 but have read mixed reviews on the 4 cyl engine in the 99-02 years? My question is the 4 cyl a good engine.. I know its a kinda broad question..But i thought this would be the best place to get an opinion!

Thanks, Wayne

What exactly do you mean by "good"? I have a 98 which I believe is the same as 99 and 00. Not sure about the 01. I got it as a graduation present in 2000 and it has been thru hell. A teenage driver that thought it was a dragster. And I have to sadly admit that it didn't get the oil changed as frequently as it should have. My brother changed the spark plugs around 100,000 (it has 116,000ish now) and I think thats about all thats ever been done to it. It runs great. I mean its not the fastest truck in the world, but it gets me where I need to go. It is my daily driver. If you have any specific questions or concerns, let me know.

I guess what i was asking is if the motor had any problems.. I wrote on here
because i could not find much useful information on the net.
I am looking at two trucks right now one has the 4.0 V6 the other the
a 4 cyl the trucks are alike except for the motors... just wanted to make sure that the 4 cyl was a good motor!

Well my 2004 Ranger has the 2.3 liter 4 cylinder and it's been really good. Plenty of power for a 4 cylinder, lots of get up and go. Gets really goood gas mileage, like 25mpg doing hills and town driveing.

Ya, i have a 92' 2.3l 4 cylinder 5 speed and it has been running well from the beginning and just little problems a long the way but no major upsets. Mine doesn't have a lot of power but enough really and it gets exellent gas mileage

the biggest thing is going to be wether the privious owner kept up on the maintenance of the motor. The 4.0 is a bullet proof monster and has a crap load of power compared to the 4 banger. The 4.0 even has a considerable difference compared to its little brother, the 3.0. I have had the change to tow with both v6s and the 4.0 kills the 3.0. If you plan on doing any towing at all, get the 4.0. If you are not worried about the MPG, don't even think about the 4 banger! The 4.0 will get on average around 17 MPG with mixed driving, I get 21 MPG on the hwy with my 4.0 with a K&N and a Tornado fuel saver system. Alot of people say it don't work, but it has on all 3 of my vehicles. Do yourself a favor and get the 4.0 unless you want to save a little on gas.

Thanks for the advice i went for the 4.0 truck not because of the 4.0 but because it was a better truck for the money... I have not had a chance to check the gas millage but it will be better than my Triton V8...
This smaller truck needs some getting used to. I had a Ford F150 Reg Cab
with the 8' bed. This is a reg cab 7' bed but the truck seems so much smaller
This new truck has an automatic trans... Several times i have went to push down the clutch and shift! Again thanks for the advice.
