Default Inspecting a used Ranger

Hey guys, I have been looking online for a while trying to find the perfect ranger to pick up once I sell my Subaru.
Finally found the perfect one, but just had a few questions I hope someone could answer.

Im looking at 1999 v6 4.0 Manual with 4x4 and with 140k miles. He also just put some nice big tires on there.

Heres the deal: They guy got the car and the previous owner didn't tell him about some issues and he had a lot of work done on the motor. All the work was done by a certified Ford mechanic and he has the receipts, so that's good. I can't remember everything that he named off but it was stuff like valves and re-plaining the heads and new timing chain, and it cost him a small fortune.

I am going to inspect the car, and even pay to take it to a mechanic to get a compression check and an overall check out of the car, which is kind of a hassle seeing as it is over 3.5 hours away.
So here's my question. What I should I look for when buying the car? What will the mechanic be looking at?

I am a little worried about the owner before him not taking good care of it, and there's a bunch of oil gunk stuck up inside the engine. Would this be something that might have been taken care of?
Thanks for any input in general

Run!

Why do you think he's selling a car that he just bought??

Look, there's always a risk with a used truck... I paid $1900 for mine (including tax), and now I'm $4100 deep because it was an old fixer upper. You're doing the right thing by having it inspected, that's for sure. But yeah, the situation sounds fishy... why the hell is a guy selling a truck he JUST fixed up?

Could be a car flipper... watch out for those...

I wouldn't waste any time pondering it, there are better fish in the sea. If you do buy it and it becomes a money pit, you have only yourself to blame.

Don't do it. Sounds like you will just be taking his bad investment off his hands

With a used truck, or any car for that matter thoroughly inspect the frame for rust and rot. One spot in particular is the rear of the frame where the rear leaf Spring mounts attach to the frame. These trucks are notorious for rotting out in that spot
