extra-dead 2003 ranger
the truck is a 2003 with the V6, auto trans, 2WD 150k + miles. It's not mine but either way I worked on it Saturday. My neighbor described the truck was running fine one minute, then shut it off and it would not restart the next minute. The battery died overnight. He replaced the battery and there was no life when he turned the key. He disconnected the new battery and that's where I jumped in. I hit the new battery with my meter and the voltage is well above 12V. No burnt fuses. No bad relays. I suggested a bad ignition switch. We replaced with a new switch and connected the fresh battery with no luck. No lights, no bells, no nothing. DEAD. So I turn the key to the OFF position and I hear a faint, slow click. I heard it again. It is coming from his pass. airbag with the ignition off and the key removed. I removed the entire ignition switch and the sound continued. With either new/old ignition switch installed, the sound continues until the key is turned. Then it stops. It also stops if you switch on any accesory i.e. the headlight switch (mind you the headlights or nothing else for that matter are working though). So only when you attempt to switch somethin on will the clicking stop. Otherwise, the truck is completely dead and the battery will run down until it is disconnected. Anyone seen this s*** before?
