Default Another '02 ABS issue

Ok, I've searched the forums and cant find an answer so here goes. My '02 has had an ABS problem for two years and its driving me nuts. Like others on here, when I come to a gentle stop, the pedal collapses to the floor. It doesnt kick back or lift at all. There is no steering wheel shake or pulling. If I make a harder stop, the brake pedal acts normally, and the truck stops normally. There is NO ABS light at all or ever was.....so no codes. What I've done so far... new pads and shoes. Turned the drums and rotors. Replaced both front ABS sensors. Checked the ohms and mvolt output of the front sensors, before and after the swap. No difference between new and old so that was a waste of money. Checked the front brg/hub assys...no excess play. The speedo works fine. The ABS pump and control unit was replaced with an identical one from salvage. The only thing I havent done is replace the rear ABS sensor. I did check the ohms of the rear sensor and it was in spec so I'm hesitant of replacing it. Honestly Im tired of crawling around under it. My next step is to take it to Ford and bend over and let them fix the damn thing. Hopefully they have the smarts, breakout box and scanner to correctly diagnose the thing. Ideas, suggestions??

I'm wondering if this could be a brake fluid issue instead of an abs issue... Just an idea, not very familiar with braking systems.

Ive read your supposed to change brake fluid every couple years...mine has never been changed. The brakes are fine when I need them...more of a nuisance thing I guess, but I hate something that doesnt work correctly, leaks or squeaks. Thanks

The master was suggested by another viewer so per his suggestion, I disabled the ABS by unplugging a wheel sensor. The ABS light came on as usual when I started it, but then stayed on as it should have. When I drove it, the brakes were fine...the problem was gone. Plugged the sensor back in, the ABS light went off and the problem came back. I guess me and my wallet are off to the dealer.

Talking Re: Another '02 ABS issue....UPDATE

I believe I finally have this figured out...I hope. I had the truck to the dealer for another small issue.....wouldnt start...lol....which they fixed...which I'll explain in another post for anyone interested. While there, I asked them to look at the ABS and explained my problem. A bit of history. A few years ago this problem started and based on a recommendation I took it to a small shop to avoid dealer rates. They said they couldnt really find anything, but did acknowledge it had a problem so advised to change out the ABS pump and control box. They got it from salvage as one from Ford was outrageous. They also changed out the left front sensor as it was "reading low" on their scan tool. It was fine for a few months, then the problem returned. Its been that way for several years...drove me nuts. While at the dealer for the starting problem I asked them to look at the ABS. I got a call saying it was repaired that it was the rear sensor which they replaced. Took it home and the next day the problem returned. Back to the dealer. This time the same mechanic that worked on it the first time says you drive, I'm going to watch the scanner. it plugs into a laptop (wish I had one) and monitors the outputs of the three sensors. The output is represented as a flat, horizontal line that climbs up and down (increase or decrease voltage) with wheel speed. When I applied the brakes and almost stopped, the left front line dropped off sharply to zero. BINGO! The ABS kicked in. Braked again...did it again. The other two lines gently curved to zero. He tells me that the rear output was erratic so thats why they replaced that sensor. Ok...not too big a deal but wish he would have noticed the front one as well. While in the truck...he suggested changing out the entire hub assy as they come with the sensor installed. After thinking this over, I decided to try the cheaper route and replace the sensor again. The bearings are fine. I had already replaced the right sensor thinking the left one was replaced, must be the right one even though both were reading in the correct ohms range. I get the new sensor, pull everything apart and notice grease packed all around the edges of the one installed a few years back by the "recommended" guy. When I removed it, it had a lot of rust on the mounting flat spot on the hub....large bumps of rust. Also the small o ring around the internal part was missing. When I compared the old to the new, the old was about .020 shorter than the new. This Im guessing in combination with the rust may have held the end of it far enough away from the reluctor ring to prevent it from generating voltage at low speeds....when I was having the issue. Dont know...just an educated guess. Plugged the hole...cleaned off the rust...put everything back together...said a few Hail Mary's and it works....no ABS kicking in. Crap...what an ordeal.

Sorry for the lengthy post....just wanted to share.

Had the same problem...permanently fixed. the problem is the dual chamber ABS valve mounted on the left fender just forward of the master. removed it, and joined the input and outflow lines with a union, and disconnected the ABS electronic module. RESULT: a nice high, hard pedal, no down drift, ABS light is off, brake light no longer comes on for no good reason. drawback, if you wanna call it that. no ABS, but I drove cars for 20 years before ABS was invented and magically, know how to drive without it. Drive nice, stay off the other guy's ass, don't go 110 mph in the rain, etc. good luck.

PS, don't forget to bleed the system and add fresh fluid after you open it up

You read where brake fluid is supposed to be changed every 2 years????? Just goes to show that a good pct of what you read on the internet is pure nonsense.

Brake fluid absorbs water. It's hygroscopic. If you like watery brakes then don't bother changing it.
