Unhappy Shifting problem

I'm sorry if this is in the wrong thread but I'm new to the site and don't quite understand.

I drive a 1997 6-cylinder and I'm having two problems. Number one is that when I go in reverse it won't shift back into drive. It just revs and won't go. I have to put it in park, turn off the engine, and start all over in drive.

The second problem is that the engine will slip in to neutral when I hit the break and come to a complete stop. Again, I need to put it in park and restart the engine. I can't get from my parking spot to the highway without restarting the engine at least twice! Any advice would be much appreciated, even my mechanic father can't figure this one out.

Sounds like you need to take it to a tranny shop.
