Hi all.
I have a 1996 with a 4.0L that only has 58k miles. It had a blown head gasket because it was not maintained very well by the previous owner and the cooling system was never flushed. The coolant had to be topped off about every 2 weeks and I noticed small amounts of coolant leaking from the engine.

I had the head gasket replaced by a local shop 2 weeks ago and tonight when I was checking fluid levels I noticed that the coolant has flecks of copper in it. The system was supposed to have been flushed when the gasket was replaced. I don't want to start throwing accusations around but...

Can anyone tell me why there would be flecks of copper in the coolant that was not there before the gasket was replaced?

The Previous owner used Bars Leak too cover a issue that you got the Luxury of Finding . you will have too flush the System , drain and flush, drain and flush, drain and flush... Most of the bars leak will come out. Refill the cooling system with straight water and drive for about 15-20 miles and vary your speed, but be sure to get the revs up a few times. Then drain and flush a few more times... There really is no need to waste money on the Prestone coolant flush stuff, I've never found it to do much of anything aside from flushing $5 from my wallet. It's up to you. I will add though, I've heard that the flush can cause potential problems later on, again I've never noticed it to do much of anything good or bad. But these are my personal results.
