Default 2002.. Overheating and gages going crazy

I have a 2002 6cyl, yesterday I was driving up a hill and my "check gauge" light kept flashing on and off ( didn't not stay on) and I look at my Temp gauge and it's almost to the red (hot). as soon as I started going down the hill the "check gauge" light stopped flashing and the temp went down almost instantly. Should I be worried?

Yes! Check coolant level and belt.

I checked the coolant and it's good.
My belt has been squeaking lately in the morning when I start it up, but besides that it's fine. I bought a new belt today so I'm gonna replace it this weekend.

Could be a voltage regulator? Any other gauges 'freaking' out?
