Default Ranger Turbo Timer ?

Hi , am new here and tried doing a search but couldnt come up with an answer, my question is do the 2009 Ford Rangers need a Turbo Timer as i've had the Ranger since new but nobody at the service center has even mentioned it. that is untill today when a deisel mechanic advised to get one. Can anybody shed some light on this please.

You have no turbocharger, so why is there a need for a turbo timer?

Your mechanic sounds like an idiot...

Ah, I didnt know Ford made models for different regions. Here in Australia they are the High Pressure Common Rail Turbo Diesel.

If you have a turbo you may need one. It depends on what kind of driving you do. If you drive the truck hard and with a load you will need to let it cool down, and if that is your normal driving state then yes you will want to get a turbo timer. If you tend to drive the truck empty and long distance I wouldn't worry so much.

And in the States we can't get the diesel. We all seem to want one but they don't offer it, damn emissions lol

Thanks richarddhoward, i can get a turbo timer for about $100 here so well worth the money, just to be on the safe side. In the USA you say Ford dont offer Diesels, it's the exact opposite here as they only come with Diesel Motors. I gotta say though I'm very happy with it, best ute I've ever had a real pleasure to drive.

I'll trade you lol I'm a diesel mechanic by trade, I'd love a diesel Ranger, and a crew cab, but for some reason the US public doesn't want one and it's also hard for the diesels to meet emissions here too.

Posted from other thread you accidentally started lol

All turbos run on the same principle, most not all are cooled by oil as well. The purpose of a turbo timer is to let the engine run and push oil through the turbo to keep it from overheating and killing the seals. There is a standard cool down period for any turbo that will depend on the driving conditions before you shut the engine down. The turbo timer allows you to walk away from the truck so you don't have to wait and shut the engine down. If you don't do a lot of hard driving ie long hilly sections or towing, you probably don't need one. If you do then I'd say get one. That's my 2 cents

Thanks mate, very informative info. My next question is would the timer void any warrantee from Ford since they dont come with a turbo timer installed, thats something i'll have to find out.
i suppose the reason turbo timers arnt installed from new is because it's illegal to let the motor idle without the driver in the vehicle (in this country anyway)...

Lol that isn't illegal here. That could be a reason that they also don't put a turbo timer in lol. I think the turbo timer will also void your warranty. Read your owner's manual it will probably tell you what the cool down time is. If nothing else call Ford. I know on the Cummins B series in Dodge trucks here in the states if you are pulling long uphill grades, it takes 5 minutes of cool down time. But that is a much larger engine than what you have in your Ranger lol

Just rang Ford, they said installing a timer could void the warrantee if it's installed wrongly or something fails sometime down the track and Ford finds the 'timer' to be at fault. In which case the company that installed it then becomes liable ...yeah right i can see things happening smoothly if that happens ...LOL...hmm, might have to wait till the 3 years Ford warrantee runs out..lol

What about having your dealer install it? Then they would be liable anyway lol

sorry I didn't know where Brisbane was. I just assumed it was some town...like if I put just Boring or Portland in my location area. I wouldn't expect everyone to know where Boring or Portland is. The RBV online community is prodominately North American...so that's what the confusion came from. Sorry if it came off "*******like".

Lol I'll drink to that my friend!!! And if I were you I'd wait for the warranty to expire, then install a turbo timer. Until then learn to just let the truck sit for a minute or so before you shut it down when you leave the truck. I'd also maybe recommend looking up the turbo manufacturer and looking up the cool down specs for that model of turbo. If they have them.
