Gas Octane Rating questions?
So I have a 2003 Ranger XLT with a 4.0L engine. 112K Miles. I've been recently having bad fuel mileage. Perhaps I was going against the wind, but just haven't noticed the bad mileage until now. I was at my local NAPA and I know the guy that works there. He told me I should be using the 87 octane or better. That should increase it or help it a little. I was using 85 octance, which I told him I was using the 85 the lowest in my area, cus I'm cheap lol.
So in your opion whats the best octance rating fuel type to use in my 4.0L ranger? What do you use?

So is it possible to harm the engine if you use 85 or even the 91 octane? If so what would be the symptoms?

Re: Gas Octane Rating questions?
87 and Seafoam it.
----------
To high of an octane could create a ping from pre-detonation. Too low of an octane will cause ignition issues and will probably cause exactly what youre having a problem with, bad gas mileage.

So I will start using 87 octane, but why seafoam?

Re: Gas Octane Rating questions?
Clean out the injectors as well as any crud you got in the tank by using a low octane, cheaper gas.

Re: Gas Octane Rating questions?
If you dont want to go through Seafoaming it, I would at least get a bottle of Techron to throw in your next tank.
----------
If you seafoam, 1/3 goes into Brake Booster vacuum line, 1/3 in gas tank, and 1/3 in engine oil. Change oil after 200-300 miles if you put it in crankcase.

Re: Gas Octane Rating questions?
Yea instead of throwing 91 in there I put in a bottle of Techron every oil change. I dont seem to have any MPG issues.

Your not putting it in the brake booster, its the vacuum line that goes to the brake booster.
