This thread is pretty timely. Just had the fuel pump changed on my 2000. One good thing about living down here is the cost of labor is helping to keep my truck on the road. For the part and labor to change it came to about $120. Time will tell how long it lasts but so far it's running great.

Well after a couple of hours of careful lifting, positioning and prying the bed is clear of the tank and precariously supported. I was concerned things were going so well. Then the hitch revealed itself. the fuel line to the filter will not come. I've blasted it and rotated it I put almost a full turn in the flexible portion of the hose.3 questions did I damage that portion of the (nylon?) hose that i twisted? Any mojo for disconnecting the fuel line? Can I cut the hose and replace the fitting?

The black fittings have a colored tab you push to be able to pull them off the filter. Sometimes, that little tab can get suck. I've used a screw driver to push the edges of the colored clip down to try and release the fitting. Local auto parts tools also sell fuel fitting tools to take them off if they're really stuck.

You can cut the hose and replace the fitting, local auto parts stores also sell doorman replacements but may need to order the one you need. They typically come with like 18" of extra nylon fuel line. To repair it, heat the nylon up with a heat gun or hair dryer to be able to push it over all of the barbs, otherwise you risk a leak. I actually just did this when making custom fuel lines adapted to stock.

Eurgh, I had a similar problem, would try and start it and the pump could be heard but it wouldn't start, left it for a few days while i went away and it ran fine for about 10 mins then died again. Figure it had to be a bad fuel pump after a lot of diagnosis with a friend so we went out and put a new pump in it. Still had the problem... Turns out my fuel cut off switch was to blame, it somehow kept resetting itself, not too sure how or why but that's what happened to me.

With the fuel line stuck on the pump, I'm out of options. I'm gonna try one more time later today to remove the fuel line from the pump. I already have the Doorman repair kit. The repair kit is certainly less than ideal. The fitting end is already made up. Heat the tube and shove the barbed fitting in. I read here or elsewhere the included barbed fittings are too small and leak where as the hardware store stuff works better(?). Hell, I'd cut the head off a black rooster at midnight to have a non leaking fuel line. The ford house says they are no longer available, so it's repair or junkyard.

There should be two different fittings; The black plastic one and the all metal fitting. You need a tool to release this metal fitting. AutoZone carries OEM brand.

Got my bed off now doing the same procedure!

Just wanted to say thanks all for help. By the grace of God, Doorman's repair kit, Parts Geek, and the friendly folks on FRF, I think I"m back on the road. with a $550 dollar savings. 2 hours idle time and no leaks yet. This thread is why I became a contributing member. You guys ROCK!

It shouldn't even be attached, just push the lights harness' down the bed and let em hang. But you want to remove bulbs first to save em from getting busted.. plus my main advise is before buying another pump check the prongs inside the actual pump assembly plug on the frame, actually wiggle them little bastards and make sure they're solid. My ranger had bad prongs in the harness itself, I ended up straight wiring it with wire connectors, problem solved. Only downside is now if I have to replace the assembly I'll have to cut the new wires as well, but most part stores won't warranty electronic parts anyway so oh well.. next time it acts up I would advise reaching in between the bed and front of back tire to grab that harness and give it a good wiggle, if it tries to work or does work you found your problem. Better than removing bed multiple times like I did... hope this helps you out, God bless

There sure is a grey plug, at least on my 2000 model.. I just been pulling lights and dropping whole harness, should a planned a lil farther... haha

Well it's been weeks now and still running I'm gonna call this one fixed. Thanks again for all the help guys. Saved me $500 that I didn't have available to spend anyway.
