Default Considering Full Size Mod...

Lately I have been throwing around the idea of going with a full size truck. I have a 4.0 SOHC 4x4 and the truck I've been considering is an F-150 4x4 with the I6 300 engine.

My question is if there's anyone of here that has any experience with the ford 300? I need to know pros and cons between these two trucks.
I.E. Towing, MPG, Reliability, etc...

I'm trying to see if I can get a truck that has more room, gets nearly the same MPG, and that can handle pulling a load better.

Any information would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The 300 I6 is one of the best engines ford made in my opinion. They are dead reliable and they pull like a team of horses, that engine is a torque machine. Mileage will be the only challenge, its not fuel efficient really but it should be close to what youre getting now.

I get about 16-17 on average now. But they're both rated the same.

Like every other truck towing...poor to fair...12-13 with the 300 and that may even be generous

Sent from my HTC One X using FRF App so you can hate on my F150 no matter where I am

That's probably what I'd get. When I tow I pull an empty trailer 1 1/2 hrs down the interstate and another 1 1/2 back with 1500-2500lbs of steer feed and I get 14-15 mpg with that. So if I had 2000lbs for all 3hrs I'd probably get that 12-13mpg

A truck with a 300 I6 is gonna be at least 17 years old. Good luck finding one that doesn't have 300,000 miles and non-rusted body panels.

In all honesty, I wouldn't even waste my time with a full-size truck any older than 03, unless you happen to just like the body style. Because either way, you're gonna be opening a can of worms that contains nasty grease worms with sides of no proper maintenance, and worn/dried out rubber components.

That's very true! But if I did happen to find one of those rare finds that's got low miles and such, would it be a good option?

It's gonna be a hard search, but if you can find it, I'd be all over it. I mean, there are 08 trucks that have 250,000 miles on them already. So mileage isn't even the most important part. It really comes down to how well the truck was maintained.

Most of the 80-96 trucks have been rode pretty hard. Don't settle for the first one that looks promising. Nitpick the hell out of it. You don't want to drop $2k-$5K on something that is gonna have serious issues in a couple of months.

Oh I won't do that! The truck I have now has given me no problems and the last thing I want to do is buy a truck that I'll regret buying thousands of dollars in repairs later

----------

What other truck would be a good option? Chevy, GMC, or Ford. Preferably a I6 or V6 for mpg. It would have to be 4x4 and be better for towing than a ranger.

As for your original question, the 300 I6 is one of Ford's best motors. I used to have one in my 1980 F150. The only reason I replaced it is because I wanted a V8, and my I6 already had a .030 cylinder overbore.

I'll be the guy here to tell you, you will get worst mpgs with an i6 300 no matter what, at least 5mpgs worst then your truck. Next, it'll hardly pull/tow much better then your current Ranger, but thats not to say it'll feel like its pullng fine. Keep in mind the weight of the older F150s, as well, and the less power it has for that weight. I'd say, it would be the same as your Ranger in the towing area, with worst mpgs. Just want to give you an idea that it might not be a better option then your Ranger, but if your perpared for it, then you shouldn't have any problems with its shortcommings.

Then what truck would you recommend that would fit what I'm looking for?

We had a 94 with the I6 and that thing was awesome. It took a beating and kept on ticking. Moved us across state multiple times. But yeah good luck finding one
