Need door lock actuator help
My 2000 ranger with power locks, the passenger side door lock actuator seems to have quit. you can still hear the noise, but the lock does not unlock, you have to do it manually. Any suggestions? does anyone know if the Ranger shares door lock hardware with any other vehicles? thanks

Re: Need door lock actuator help
Try an explorer of the same year if not then pull the actuator from a Ranger at a scrap yard.

You say that it does not unlock, will it lock? If you can still hear the noise maybe the actuator arm has worked loose. Time to open the door panel and check.

Re: Need door lock actuator help
Same problem. Won't lock or unlock either from keyless remote or cab controls...any way to know if it is the actuator itself or just the pin/arm/bar issue without disassembling the door?

Re: Need door lock actuator help
Can you hear the actuator? If not, it is something other than the control arm.

What do you think you will accomplish without dissembling the door?

Re: Need door lock actuator help
I can hear the electronics working in the doors, which would lead me to think the actuators are working so I was hoping to accomplish someone saying: "Yeah if you hear the electronics your actuators aren't dead so don't bother buying new ones, its the control arm issue" I just wanted to see if there was a way to know for sure because I'd rather have the part in hand and ready to replace so I can save myself half an hour taking the door apart to find out I need to order the part and then putting it back together so I can drive for the week or whatever it would take to get in the mail and then to have to repeat the process again...just trying to accomplish saving myself time and money that's all

Re: Need door lock actuator help
Im not too sure about that, because I have manual locks (and kind of glad I do. lol). But I would say best bet would be to be take the door pannel off to see. I know you dont want to, but its best to be absolutely sure of the part you need before you buy it. Just my opinion.

Re: Need door lock actuator help
Probably is the actuator - I had to change mine out, also on the passenger side, a few years ago.
Not all that difficult to do, just take your time, and put everything back in the way you take it off.
Now as to the whirring noise, that leads you to hope that the actuator is still working:
I took the old one apart, just out of curiosity, and saw that there's a plastic gear that rotates, that then meshes with a metal piece that "catches" and activates the locks (if I remember correctly). Well, what seems to happen is that the plastic part (the "teeth" on it) eventually wears out and then doesn't catch the metal piece, and the result is that the power lock doesn't work (but the motor still works, and will sound like its working). So it was strictly a "mechanical" problem with the part, nothing "electrical". That's what it kind of looked like to me - but bear in mind I was looking at a broken part (and I wasn't going to break apart a working part to compare). The part was, if I remember, about $80 or $90 CDN from the dealer.
Hope this helps.
Good luck on your repair - get an actuator from the JY as suggested if the part is too pricey from the dealer - it'll be substantially cheaper. After that, it's all "elbow grease".

Re: Need door lock actuator help
Thanks for the helpful advice all. I watched
on how to replace the actuator and it does indeed look like it won't take as much time to take the panel off or even replace it for that matter, but I still hope it is just the control arm that needs to be reseated or resecured as I have heard others mention. Anyone have more info on this?
I found my replacement actuators for pretty cheap ($13.03 a piece) right here. Although of course its one of those sites that doesn't let you see the damn shipping cost until you've already entered all your credit card info...hate that
As to the worn plastic piece inside the actuator that was mentioned: Why wouldn't they make it out of metal (unless there is some conductivity reason)?...maybe so the ford dealerships can charge you $300 to replace a part that is set up to fail after 11 years? Oh well...
Picked up a little mirror extension tool and some 3M adhesive spray in-case the moisture barrier needs a better seal when I put it back on and should be ready to diagnose tomorrow. I will let ya'll know what happens. Can't wait to lock my doors again!

Re: Need door lock actuator help
Ok, so I opened up the Passenger Door.
I looked inside the access hole with a flashlight and mirror, located the arm and the actuator. I saw the little white plastic piece on the arms that people referenced as a common piece that breaks or comes loose, but everything looks connected just fine. I made sure everything was where it was supposed to be, nothing loose sitting at the bottom of the door. Put door back together and locked doors manually, then was able to open them with the keyless remote, but not lock them...Seems to work for now, have locked my car in public places a few times since and crossed my fingers. Remote opened locks fine, but its still nerve racking to know that it isn't doing half its job...Oh yeah and I forgot to mention the driver's door is impossible to get into manually with the key and the drivers side is a toss up depending if you get the magic touch just right. Sprayed graphite lube into both locks to no real avail. Do I need to replace my door locks or get a new key cut? Guess I might as well replace both actuators as there doesn't seem there is much else I could do. Seems like it will be a huge pain in the A S S though...being a blind repair...can't wait!
