Default The (Incomplete) Laundry List

I started a needs/wants list for the Ranger I bought last week. Some will likely come from the junk yard. I'll add to the list as I come up with more "to-do's" as these are mostly aesthetic. I'm riding the "as-long-as-I'm-doing-it" train and I would love to upgrade simultaneously so if you know of a good website or other resource for finding inexpensive alternatives that would be awesome. I haven't been able to find a good site yet.

I won't be able to tackle all these things quickly (I have one semester left for my Bachelor's, and I work also), but I will try to post before/after pictures as I chip away at the list.

1992 Ranger XLT 4.0L

JUNK YARD ITEMS TO GET
  • Fuel/gas door
  • Fully-powered Driver Seat (current one only has lumbar/side-of-my-ass support, also needed for the (broken) recliner lever)
  • Fully-powered Passenger Seat (recliner lever works on this one)
  • Headliner
  • Interior door handles
  • Tailgate handle/assembly (VERY finicky to open)
  • Stock stereo wiring harness (some idiot cut the harness off)
  • Headlight switch
  • Overhead Console Mod (I saw the sticky, but not sure if I can do it in the '92)
  • Center Console (from explorer maybe? other ideas?)
  • Heater vents
OTHER SOURCE??
  • Bed toolbox
  • Windshield (is there a good inexpensive company to do this?)
  • Stereo Head Unit
  • Stereo Dash Kit/Wiring Harness
  • Speakers all around (maybe add 2 more??)
  • Climate Control Panel (aftermarket maybe?)
  • Driver-side "Oh-shit" Handle
  • Passenger Window (may need motor/switch/glass)
  • Grill Guard (a BEEFY one)
  • Winch/Something to mount it on
  • Roll Cage?? (HAH, maybe just a bar in the bed with lights)
  • Bed-liner (my buddy suggests a couple gallons of some spray-on will be best)
Let me know if you have ideas for other things I should add to the list too. Thanks in advance!!

-Jake

I just put in a new deck, the Alpine CDE-147BT. $200 at crutchfield.com, which includes all mounting and wiring adapters needed.
I'm not sure what you're looking for in a stereo, or your price range, but this is a pretty nice deck. It has a rear USB ( I like to keep a flash drive in the glovebox- it doesn't skip on bumpy roads like a CD), and it has bluetooth, to connect to both Android and I-phones- for both calls and streaming music via pandora or internal memory.
They also have a smartphone app that allows you to tweak the audio settings from your phone, but I'm having issues getting it to work, so I can't comment on that.

As to some of the other things on your list - watch craigslist. I regularly see tool boxes and grill guards posted locally.
Some of the things on your list might be found in this forum's classified section as well.
Good luck!

When I get the money it will likely be Kenwood; my favorite usually. I just installed one in my friends car a few weeks a ago.

I forgot about craigslist for parts, thanks for the tip. Any good websites I should know about other than CL?

Might try amazon, or JCWhitney.
I haven't bought much for my Ranger, most of my bookmarks are Jeep parts sites LoL

Kenwood makes great decks too, that's what I had in my Jeep.

I did see jcwhitney... I'll have to look around on there some more. I tried amazon too, but I wasn't looking for anything specific and after putting in the vehicle info it wanted me to search by category. That made it pretty hard to just browse for ideas. Plus I'm always skeptical about quality on amazon, but with a list of to-dos I will probably look again.

Anybody have any experience with eBay parts? I know it's very buyer-beware, but I thought I'd ask.

When I buy off amazon, I usually find the exact item I'm looking for elsewhere, then check amazon's price. Also, read the reviews. They're pretty good at pointing out the junk.

The only auto part I ever bought off ebay was an instrument cluster overlay, about 10 years ago. It had it's own built-in lighting, and it's own dimmer switch. The switch started failing after a couple of years, resulting in a few "dead spots" in the switch.

Googling the item you're looking for will show you a few websites that sell them. Many websites are picking up the "customer review" feature.

I buy things from Amazon all the time, but no vehicle parts, yet. I have purchased parts off of eBay for many different vehicles over the past 10 years or so. Typically using Buy-it-now instead of bidding, and haven't had an issue yet. I do it rarely though, and research a lot before purchasing.

When I owned my Bronco II a few years back I browsed JC Whitney, Summit, and LMC Truck a lot for price comparisons and accessories (recently started checking out Rock Auto too). I haven't purchased through them yet.
