Some way of starting a fire, in case you end up stranded in inclimate weather. I would also recommend one of those super cheap rain ponchos that come in a teeny pack. Doesn't take much room, but fairly versatile.

And of course, always have some water with you.

Keeping emergency supplies is a must even when your just daily driving.
My suggestions beyond flares, lighting, and first aid are:
Blanket, tarp, tools, extra fluids, hat, WATER, toilet tissue, WATER, candles and a metal coffee can, lighters and fire starter(flint rod)gloves and wool socks, cell charger, jumper cables, and keep your spare in good condition

Jumper cables, paper towels/shop towels, TP, waterless hand cleaner, appropriate socket for belt tensioner to go along with your ratchet/breaker bar, tow/recovery strap, couple of $ worth of change and probably the biggest peace of mind... AAA membership ;-)

My roadside emergency package consists of a 2 meter radio, cell phone to call Ford Roadside Assistance 1-800-241-3673. Also carry a Sig P232 with night sights in case the emergency is an "ATTEMPTED" car jacking.

Gojo. It's nice to be able to get some of the truck off of you if you have a breakdown.

Paper maps of where you are going to drive,
in winter, a way to stay warm all night by the side of the road(sleeping bag)
in summer, a way to stay cool (shorts, camp chair and some type of shade)
extra food and water, + water for the engine (1 or 2 gallons)

Copy of my post on another forum.

1. Phone charger (old phone might help, 911 always works by law)
2. Map
3. Compass
4. Spare clothes (t-shirt, long sleeve, sweater, underwear, long johns, pants, WOOL SOCKS)
5. Jacket
6. Towel
7. Rain jacket
8. Work boots or winter boots (rubber galoshes with liners, waterproof and easy to dry)
9. Winter hats, gloves (multiple pairs), scarf
10. Wool blankets
11. Army sleeping bag system (in a dry sack)
12. Mini snow shovel or folding shovel (full size shovel now)
13. Small bag of sand
14. Flashlight (spare batteries)
15. Candles
16. Matches, lighter, ferro rod
17. Pencil, pen, paper
18. First aid kit
19. Spare med's in case I forgot mine on a trip
20. Nail clippers and tweezers, TICK TOOL
21. Gold bond
22. Chapstick
23.Insect wipes
24. Food (power bars, beef jerky, chocolate, enough for at least two days)
25. Water (case)
26. Toilet paper
27. Soap
28. Hand sanitizer
29.Emergency triangles
30. Jumper cables
31. Cash hidden in the glovebox
32. Two ton bottle jack, spare tire in holder, lug wrench, fix a flat, tire gauge
33. Tool kit (metric and english wrenches, needlenose pliers w/ wire cutters, pipe pliers, vise grips, screwdrivers, razor, file, safety glasses, ratchet set w/ extension, allen wrenches, zip ties, paracord, duct / electrical tape, tape measure, metal saw blades, fuses, ear plugs, funnel, shop rags, hammer)
34. Mini air compressor (plug in)
35. Automotive repair manual

45. Sheath knife (at least one)
46. Tarps
47. Ground cloth
48. Couple of 1 by 6's cut into foot and a half lengths in my tool box

I think that's it. Not all of it fits in my toolbox, but it barely takes up any of the room behind my seat. Call me crazy, but it gets used.

In the summer I normally throw in...
1. Chainsaw, spare chain, saw tool, bar oil, two stroke mix
2. Two stroke gas and regular gas
3. Machete
4. Crowbar / 6 foot crowbar
5. Sledgehammer
6. Trauma kit (tourniquet, quik clot, lots of gauze, trauma pads, etique)

11. Bag of kindling... I'm lazy...
12. Pot and some food like ramen, also tea and cocoa
13. Fishing poles and tackle
14. Life jacket
15. Nails / dry wall screws
16. Brush clippers
17. More axes...

What am I forgetting... hmmm...

Edit: Plumbers torch is a big favorite... I also keep a "friend" in the serpa holster bolted to my seat... a folding a chair... paracord... snares for some odd reason... a couple smoke grenades...
