I am not sure how broad the problem is but I was told to look at the back glass seal for leaks. An old man told me that he had this issue on more than one 90's model Ranger.

Thumbs up Re: what to look for when buying a used ranger

you can check a lot really, check the rear differential for leaks or saturation, check the oil pan for leaks, valve covers, take a glimpse at the wiring to make sure it hasn't been rigged, check the color of the coolant to see how well the truck has been maintained, same with the oil and trans. just all basic stuff, but you can tell how well has been takin care of by all of this stuff. also, start the truck and listen for any engine noise that doesnt sound right. you can check the bolts on the front fenders to see if it has been in a wreck. well here are a few things i check before i buy anything. hope it helps.

The only thing I would add, and this is from the experience that I am currently having......Climb underneath the truck and wiggle the pipes. If anything shakes or looks loose from the headers up watch out. I bought mine thinking it only needed donut gaskets and ended up having to pull the motor to get the broken off manifold bolts out of it. Also if you buy one from somebody instead of from a lot make them to go with you to get it transfered. I bought mine in a different county from where I live on a Friday, paid cash money for it, and when I went to the courhouse on Monday to transfer it found out the guy still owed 4 years worth of back taxes on it. He has been dodging me and not answering my phone calls ever since. Aside from all the good advice that others have given those are the main things I would do/look for.

Check the bottom of the doors for rust. This seems to be a fairly common issue.

Also, if it is a 4-door, check that all 4 open and close smoothly and the dome light goes out w/o having to slam the doors.

LEAKS!! I got more seals and gaskets that need replacing than I can shake a stick at. Wish I would have spent more time under the truck instead of worrying about stupid stuff like the paint and interior. But seriously, if you get under the truck look on the body of the truck and if you see oil splattered in various places around the drive shaft then think twice!
