3.73 open diff. on the highway i usually run between 65-70 MPH, which the truck seems to like, runs around 1900-2k rpm. only gotta merge twice. then the local roads i can coast almost all the way to town, 25 + miles, 45-50 MPH at 1000-1900rpm. then going home 45 MPH at 3k rpm for half the trip, lol.

yeah i had 4x4 automatic too but had 4.10 gearing...i would have been extremely happy to get 20 MPG. I should have regeared it. >

I must have a fluke of an engine lol with a heavy foot i average 21-22mpg highway and if i drive like a human 24-25mpg is easily achieved. And this is on a 210 mile trip to school that i have made probably closer 40 times and my mpg is consistent, this is with 4x4 auto and 4.10 gears at about 2400rpm at 70mph

But don't get me wrong if i had the chance to get a sohc 4.0 i would be all over it lol my 3.0 needs mo powah

the way i look at it the 3.0L does everything i NEED it to do. It does some light to moderate towing and gets ok mpg for what it is. The most important thing to me is it is a TANK it is soooo reliable (knock on wood). Just wish i could say the same for the auto POS thats in it lol

I have a 1991, the first year offered with the 3.0. Mine has 151,000 miles and runs like new. It has great pick up but when you get up in them high gears you can put the pedal to floor and you won't get really any more power. I have done the throttle cable mod too lol in low gears though it defiantly has some pick up. Bullet proof engine, they can last almost forever. I've heard of many that got up well over 300,000 miles. I've never driven a 4.0 Ranger but I have driven a 4.0 Sport Trac and Explorer, they do have some good power, very strong V6 and they are reliable, not sure as much as the 3.0 but I still see lots of old 4.0s still on the road
