Re: The "what do you hate about your Ranger today" thread
Higher octane does nothing for your truck without you actually changing how it is tuned. Octane is a rating of how resistant to detonation or pre-ignition a given gasoline is. It is not a rating of the amount of energy contained in the gas.
So as an example, I will be changing the ECU program on my bike, the ignition timing is changed. It is changed such that regular octane gas will cause detonation, also called pinging. So I will run a higher octane gas so that ignition can once again happen at the proper point in the engine cycle.
Edit: A higher octane is not 'bad' for your truck, it just doesn't do anything. So you are wasting the extra money it takes to pay for it.

Agreed, though just to completely answer his question, non-ethanol IS beneficial to power and gas mileage.
A gallon of E10 is roughly 96.7% as energy dense as a gallon of pure gasoline. For a car that gets 30mpg on pure gasoline (ALL epa tests are done with 100% gasoline despite the fact that many of us cant get anything but E10), it roughly equates to 29mpg on E10. And then there is the power loss on top of that.
Ethanol is a joke. Its corrosive and attracts water, its not as energy dense, and its stupid to use a food source for fuel. All this ethanol crap is due to a lobby trying to get rich off selling corn as fuel, and rationalized by politicians claiming energy independence is the cause for ethanol- bull****.
I agree we need to reduce our reliance on fuel sources coming from volatile regions of the world and indeed reduce our reliance on oil completely, but in smart ways. In a world and even country where people are starving, it seems really messed up we use a potential food source and agricultural land for producing fuel to power H2s, Suburbans, and lifted gas guzzling street queens that never see a dirt road much less "off roading."

I didn't answer that part of the question because not many people really want to search a 'pure gas' station. Granted in SC they are a little more common than here, but it is a pain. And I don't know what 'pure gas' costs, so I don't know if it is cost comparable to e10 or not.

I meant like realistically develop infrastructure that reduces the use of fossil fuels and better enables productivity within the system. Building more roads and drilling in Alaska is a stopgap- something needs to change eventually because fossil fuels wont be able to support a growing population with exponentially growing energy needs indefinitely.
Cars are only one facet of fossil fuel use; we can go a long way on the fossil fuel we have just by finding energy efficient solutions outside the automotive industry. And eventually the ICE will be replaced by better technology where power can be generated more efficiently.

If there was a pure gas station in Austin id prolly gas up there. Unfortunately no gas station anywhere near here has pure gasoline. In terms of extra cost, I think if you factor out the cost of creating and shipping ethanol (along with the fuel consumed in this process), its cheaper to make a gallon of pure gasoline energy wise than it is to make a gallon of e10. Just because gas stations charge more for pure gasoline doesnt mean its more expensive to make- either the stations are turning a profit by catering to a small demographic of drivers, or the suppliers to the stations are.
Anyways, to get back on topic, I hate not having doors on the extended cab part of my truck. Less weight I guess, but man it would sure be nice.

Ironic it is with my tirades that I hate the prius. Ill admit Im a bit of a hypocrite here because I love me my vehicles, but the current modality of things cant go on forever.

I know of atleast 5-6 gas stations within 5 miles of me that sell non ethanol gas. 2 of them sell 87, 89, and 93 octane non ethanol gas. The rest are either 87 or 93 octane non ethanol only. I can get 87 octane non ethanol for like $2.30 a gal.
I do landscaping so I use it all the time in my equipment.

Around me it's called Rec90 non ethanol 90 octane fuel. I run it in atvs and my boat. It's about $3.50 a gallon
