I hate how it handles hills. Little 4 bangers even if they are duratecs just cant pull some hills in 5th. I cant even imagine if I lived out west and had to do a PASS

It's all about axle ratio. I'm sure 4.0's shift down to 4th on any appreciable hill. 5th is OD, which is pretty much for flat straight roads 50 mph or faster.

I have 4.10 gearing, but yeah youre right. I think having a stick exaggerates the feeling of gutlessness a bit because YOU actually have to shift- an automatic requires less physical effort and so you arent conscious of it lacking the balls to get up a hill. This despite the fact a stick has a slightly lower overdrive than an auto (.79:1 stick vs .75:1 auto IIRC).

My last "car" was a 99 Miata- I could go anywhere in OD on that little 1.8l and didnt even need tons of throttle. It also weighed 2200lbs, was aerodynamic and was geared even lower than the Ranger, so..

Still dont have to like it

The only time I can take a hill in 5th is if I'm doing faster than 65. And that's with 4.10s I'm also turning like.. 3200 Rpms.. So.. Hahah.

I had an '81 BMW 320i with the 1.8l and a 3speed auto trans that thing was gutless and I couldn't maintain speed worth shit going up a hill in that car lol. I'm sure my ranger will be a lot better once I get a new trans in it

You needed a 5 speed on that car, would have completely changed it

320is still has the closed ratio dogleg trans so it'd be a good swap. What engine you using?

I don't like the vagueness of the coolant reservoir. I have a 2002 2.3l duratec with the 5speed. How is the coolant supposed to be measured on the tank? While the coolant is cold or hot? And there are a Min and Max levels on the tank. Is the Min level for cold and the Max level for hot? Or is it just supposed to be between the two marks when cold??
