Could it be the control module I got was a dud? I cheaped out, and bought a JY one off of Ebay. I get the lights on the dash after I start it.

I've heard of people say there's a vaccum on the 4WD that will sometimes not engage it

Idk if it will work but did you try resetting the shift module thing by unhooking the batt for like 5 min?
Check the fuse?
I had issues with mine too. I installed manual hubs and a manual T case. 4wd works great now. Lights still flash on the dash though. I haven't pulled the shift module out yet.

Re: The "what do you hate about your Ranger today" thread
This one's an '02... no vacuum hubs. Just for the heck of it tested the plug to the dash switch... nothing. If anything the CM I bought was a dud too... the price I pay for being cheap I guess.
All fuses check out OK.

Found a brand new one on Amazon for $146, went ahead and bought it. If that takes care of it, I will most definitely be trying to get my money back on the JY one.
My dad tested the old transfer case motor, it was still in good working order. oh well...

piston rings
When they wear or even break you either lose compression on a cylinder or start blowing through oil

piston rings. They seal the gap between the piston and cylinder wall preventing oil from entering the combustion chamber and burning oil.

If it's the rings, you'll have blue smoke coming out of the exhaust.
Could also be the rear main seal. Check where the motor and trans connect and if there's a leak there, it's the rear main seal.

Oh well it's not the rings. I did notice a small leak where near the trans so that could be it
