Default 4.0l or 3.0l...

Okay I'm seriously gettin' confused here... I've read my vin a few times, and off memory the digit is x, when looking up the engine... That is the 4.0l flex fuel I believe, however under the hood it says 3.0 on the Radiator cover?? I'm thinking that I might have a 4.0L now, and that the radiator has been replaced but I don't even know?? Any suggestions on problem solving here?

My 3.0 didnt say anything on the engine, but my 4.0 says 4.0L real big on the top like the 5.0s do. Would you call your truck slow as hell or a little quick? Or post a pic of the engine bay and I bet you get a quicker answer.

My engine's got a shitton of low end torque, not that it helps that I'm drivin' clutch , but It's 12:00 dude no pix tonight...

Well I mean it's got some miles under its hood, and theres a 3.0l radiator plastic guard, is there a way on the engine other than the bold lettering that I could tell?

Im not saying tonight, just when you want an answer. Or like they said, carfax it.

See where this one says 5.0v8? Im assuming you dont have something on the top of your engine, or you wouldnt be asking...Im going to go out on a limb and say you have a 3.0

To my knowledge, Ford never made a flex fuel 4.0L. They only made flex fuel engines in the rangers with the 3.0L. The 4.0L have "4.0l" written across on top of the intake manifold. I'm not sure if the 3.0L do or not. The 8th digit of the vin will tell you what engine you have. If its an "x" then you have the 4.0L. I believe a "u" is used to designate the 3.0L.

"The" digit is very vague, a lot of 3.0s have a VIN number similar to this: 1FTYR14UX

Where the U represents the 3.0.

What do you mean "vague"? The 3.0 will always have "u" in the 8th digit and the 4.0 will always have "x" in that spot. The flex fuel 3.0 may have a different digit though. The only exception I can think of to this is if someone did a cab swap or different engine swap.

My 1999, 3.0 Flex Fuel has 3.0 on the valve covers. Try looking on your valve cover....

The 4.0 often has an E in that spot as well. However, my comment was pointed towards the OP who said he checked "the" digit but didn't specify which digit.

I've seen quite a few 3.0 engines who have a vin like: 1FTYR14UX

Thus it has a U to represent the 3.0, but the next digit is an X. My guess is that the OP has a vin like the above, and is reading the wrong digit.

Yeh, I forget that the SOHC cam would have a different digit. The OHV motors had the "x" in the vin. The SOHC must have the "e" then.

And now I understand what you mean by "vague."

Okay... I have an x as my digit, the manifold was replaced this late summer due to a hairline crack that dropped my compression, my mechanic is a fucking goober and replaced the radiator with a 3.0l version...
