I would NEVER put cinder blocks in your bed unless youre hauling them somewhere. you get hit, or hit someone, you might end up with them in your cab.

I'll second that, I've seen the aftermath of such an accident.

400 pounds is a little too much, it may help you in getting traction to get going, but remember thats also 400 more pounds to make you lose control... just go slow, get some really good snow tires with studs if your state will allow it, pack some chains also, and you should be just fine, here is my 01 2wd in snow


edit: if you go the round with any kind of weight in the back, build yourself a box that will sit directly over the rear wheels, it will help in handling in a big way by putting that weight over the rear tires

It depends, if you put the weight farther back then you can get away with having less weight and still put the same force on the back tires. But no matter how you distribute it to try and get the same force on the back tires, you're right that its going to change the handling/control but I think as long as you're careful its not really an issue (I've driven the past 2 winters with over 300 lbs all the way back at the tailgate).

coming from a ND driver,

bring extra clothes, blankets, food, water, energy bars or other snacks, extra cell phone or cb and the things others have stated..

take it slow, I've pulled plenty of people out of the ditch already this year
