Default I don't understand ford.

I sent an email to ford. I was asking about the future of the Ford Ranger. I wasn't really expecting an answer. I figured I was worth a try though. What caught my eye was this. "There are no details at this time reflecting plans about any changes or upgrade on the Ford Ranger. From time to time, vehicle models and options are added, deleted or modified. Decisions to make these changes take into account factors such as market trends, customer demands, engineering advances, and Dealership input." LOL yea, but all of the competitor pickups have actually crew cabs. Why doesn't the Ranger? So I don't think they do consider market trends, customer demands, etc. Everywhere I go pickups with crew cabs pop up. I would say they are just as popular with the compact and midsized as with the full sized trucks. I am not actually interested in the crew cab. My next truck will be standard. However, I noticed many people seem interested in the crew cab. I would rather have a longer bed.

Their answer to the crew cab was the sport trac. Which really does not help people who like a actaul bed to haul things.

I've emailed them before too! lol
And guess what... That was the EXACT SAME thing they sent me back!
So does that mean they might not be canceling the Ranger! lol jk

First off, I give you props for taking some action to learn the truth. But that email they send out is just a canned response that they send regarding essentially any inquiry. It doesn't necessarily mean there are no plans to change anything, but if there were to be any changes they aren't ready to announce it. I believe that email usually also has a line saying something along the lines of "We don't know what our engineering and design departments are doing" as a way out of the question.

IMHO, the Ford Rangers main strength is it's low price. It allows them to acquire fleet businesses, and the consumer who is looking for a truck on a budget. Redesigning the Ranger would have been a huge gamble and likely would have upped the prices, which would have hurt one of their strongest selling points.

As STL said, Ford released the sport trac which has a crew cab and a bed. Ford also has an F-150 with a crew cab and a bed. Ford probably thinks they don't need 3 different vehicles with crew cabs and a bed. However, it's likely they are considering doing something as they are hinting at a change in production.

I personally don't think the sport trac should exist. The price of the ranger has gone up from 2009 to 2010. They should take the core values of the ranger. Fuel economy, and reliability and put that into a resigned pickup. They also can keep the overall price of the vehicle down in comparison to its competitors. That is the main reason why Ford can still sell Rangers. They should also bring back the FX4. For a truck like the ranger I believe that was an awesome off road vehicle. Considering it was a stock vehicle. When you take a 2000 ranger and a 2010 ranger its easy to see how much they have in common. In order to increase sales this is what has to be done. Its no secret the ranger's competitors out sell it. Also the F-150 is now only a full sized pickup. The 4.2L V6 was discontinued. Trucks like the tacoma have the crew cab option.

I have a thread in another forum on this very subject. I actually got a real response from ford. They feel that the small truck market is slowly going away. They feel the Ranger as a lifestyle vehicle. Their opinion is that if they drop the Ranger we'll move up to the F150 or drop down to the Focus (no joke). I have brought up the idea in the other forums about a letter writing campaign to Ford that we still need the Ranger and not that "overseas" one either. They could shrink the F150 by 1/3 and poof you have a mid-size Ranger. Put an eco-boost 4cyl, 3.7L v6 and even offer a diesel and you'd have to beat customers off with a stick.

We need the moderators in all the Ranger based forums to get together and try to save our beloved truck!

Oh, if anyone doesn't know already GM & Chrysler are getting rid of their "small" trucks as well and Nissan & Toyota are thinking about shrinking the size of theirs.

And in Ford's eyes diluting the market with more of a similar product, probably doesn't sound appealing.

"Ford" is a corporation, so one random employees opinion of the truck market doesn't signify anything. If I remember correctly, the individual commenting on the Ranger market was a marketing employee. Their job is narrow and it is to focus on the market and ways to improve market share, so of course their response will be commenting on ways to maximize the market share. However, that is only a small part of the equation. Production, engineering, designers all have very significant roles in determining what is developed. There are so many different variables that come into play when developing vehicles... it's not as easy as some think.

BTW, I feel like I'm beating a dead horse here.... but Ford has never said they are getting rid of the Ranger. The only ones to say that are automotive blogs, and random people (probably because they read the automotive blogs).

I think Ford is thinking of what to do with the ranger. They were going to end it in 2008 but it's still going in production right now. One factor is in 2008 we had some of the most ridiculous gas prices and kept the ranger going for its fuel economy.

I've heard a rumor of a SVT Ranger coming available in 2011.......

Think upgraded lowered suspension, upgraded brakes, and a "special" V6........

Just a rumor though, not confirmed.
