Default Keep or Sell?

So I need some opinions on this. I bought my Ranger last May, and after putting less than 2k miles on it, a rock went through my radiator. Long story short it overheated and burnt up 2 cylinders. So I paid about $4200 to put in a brand new engine. That was finished up in August, and since then I've had it in 4 times for a rear main seal leak, once for the oil pressure sending unit, once for an exhaust leak, and once for a broken IAC valve. Now, this is all covered under warranty, but the result is that the truck has spent more time in the shop than at home.

I finally convinced the shop that it had a defect causing the rear main seal issue, and it's currently getting ANOTHER brand new engine, under warranty.

So the grand total including purchase price, new engine, and miscellaneous things it needed here and there, comes out to about $12k. Obviously if I sell it, I'm going to take a loss, but I just don't know if I can trust the thing. On the other hand, it's 100% paid for and might not have any more issues when I get the new engine.

So. Thoughts? Suggestions?

I would keep it for a little while after the new engine is in. If it performs well I don't see a reason to sell it. No payments and its your gas saver lol

I know hindsight is always 20/20, but why would you pay $4200 for a new engine vs. getting a junkyard one with low mileage? Either way, I agree with Brandon in waiting to see if the new engine will solve all the issues because if not, you can always sell it then and take the loss.

I say keep it once the new engine is in. But if you keep having issues with it then ditch the bitch.

Only junkyard around didn't have any 3.0's in good shape. It also has a 3-year, unlimited mileage warranty, which I wound up needing. lol.

I'm just afraid of something else going wrong (not engine related) and having to shell out more money to fix it before I could sell it.

Good on the warranty part, but you have a 13 year old truck. Eventually, things are going to start needing replaced/repaired. Hppefully, not soon, though.

Sounds like you've answered your own question. The longer you wait, the less you'll get back.

If your tranny is like mine, it won't be lasting much longer. My tranny is going out and now whenever I start my truck there's a grinding like noise.

I've been down this road before....my wife had an olds bravada that was a complete money pit....after spending about 6,000 on it in within a two year period I finally sold it...(lol) the kid I sold it to I see periodically and he tells me it hasn't cost him a dime to drive it...I don't know if its because I fixed everything on it or the truck just hated my wife....any way trucks gone wife's still around, still not sure which would have cost less....lol....long story short don't sell what you've paid for or some kid might be driving around trouble free on your dime too...
