I was about to ask you the same question bigfisher..

What are you not understanding here? Anything can be engineered to accomplish anything... Are you saying this is a false statement.

Larger does equal stronger and better, but only because the automakers forced that reality on us. However i do think it's better to have a wider truck for stability while towing. When it comes to towing a huge toyhauler, the big trucks are the best for that job. Even if a beefy powerful midsize truck exists, its still better from a physics standpoint to pull a toyhauler with a 1 or 2 ton truck.

For example,

Carbon fiber vs steel, carbon fiber is more than twice the strength of steel yet is much much lighter. Obviously carbon fiber is much more expensive but this is an example that will help get my point across

This!!!! Im takeing some engeneering classes in college, and we had to build a bridge out of 1/8" x1/8" strips of bulsa wood. One persons held 420 lbs. Now if you told someone that a bulsa wood bridge could hold 420lbs they wouldnt belive it. Engineering can produce some amazeing things. This concept f100 wont compete with full sizes but some day there may be one when engineering becomes more advanced. Like if you went back to the 1800s and told people we have flying machines that go around the world they wouldnt belive it either.

Apparently you missed the English classes Just messin' with you! Sorry to the hardcore Ranger drivers, if given the chance, I would buy an F-150. Also, to the OP, I didn't even think about Ford testing new components like that using an existing platform! Interesting!

no i'm not. But a 5000 pound truck will NOT pull 30,000lbs as good as a 10,000 lb truck.

carbon fiber will also shatter into pieces as well.

I think its funny how he thinks that trucks are still doing the same type of work they did 30 yrs ago....lol.
Have u seen new tractors and equipment, compared to ones 30 yrs ago?
Equipment, tools, machines, and demand has changed....no way in hell will an old 1950 ford tow some of he huge equipment of today...

Boats are another good example...and rvs......

Engineering can do amazing things....but it cant walk on water...it still limited to the laws of physics....

Bigfisher, I understand that you have a large post count and all, but your seriously in need of some research and reading. Its difficult to have a informative debate with you without any structure present. What are you telling me? What am I specifically saying that is incorrect to you?

Bigger parts= bigger loads. Why do you think they make huge semi's to haul those huge trailers? Because an F-350, dodge ram 3500, or chevy/gm 3500 cant do it, they arent big and powerful enough.

Sent from my old school HTC EVO Shift so I can screw off at work whenever I want

I don't see how a large post count means anything. I am telling you that a small truck will NOT tow a load as well as a large truck. COMMON SENSE tells you that, or are you lacking in that as well as intelligence?

Larger and heavier certainly do not always mean better, but in certain situations the size and mass of a heavy truck is needed.
For example, (hypothetically) you can put any motor you want in a Ranger (Triton V10 or Powerstroke or Cummins or whatever) and gear it down where it will pull practicaly any load. Does that mean it will be controlable and safe at 75 mph in a cross wind with a loaded 30' goose neck? No. It won't. It doesn't have enough mass to hold the trailer or to get enough traction to stop it.
And you can certainly be unsafe with a 3500 crew cab long bed dually also, but because it is so much longer wider and heavier it has a much higher safety margin when it comes to stopping and controlling a load.

To put it another way:
A Ranger with a built 460 will out run a F-350 with the same motor all day. And as long as it could get traction it could pull the same load (assuming the drivetrain holds) but it will NOT pull the same load at with anywhere near the same degree of safety at speed, or stop it as quickly.

Gcextreme, you can call me out directly. How were trucks not doing the same thing as they are today? How did anything ever get accomplished in the 50's and 60's?

Lets say you make a bigger version of the exact same suspension. Like a bridge. If you design a bridge 4feet long, and it holds 10 pounds, physics says that a larger version of the same thing will hold proportional to it. So a 40 foot bridge with the components to it proportionally sized will hold 100 pounds. Basic physics basic algebra. Come on dude.

Today light duty trucks (3500, 4500, & 5500s) are pulling loads that would require a semi truck in the '40s & '50s

Yes they can design something that will hold and pull an extreme amount of weight, but if you make the parts bigger, they will hold and pull bigger. That's physics
