no need in AZ, but never needed in Idaho ether with 2wd, good rubber and good driving no problem in the snow.

Re: How much weight do you carry in the back of your truck in the winter?
So for 4wd I shouldn't have to put any weight in the back of my truck? I have concrete blocks sitting around so either way it's not a big deal but this is my first 4wd so I'm not sure.

Re: How much weight do you carry in the back of your truck in the winter?
it wont hurt! if the roads are clear and you don't go where the plows don't you should be fine, but remember nothing stops or turns on ice. fresh snow is better then packed smooth snow on the road. what did you drive before the Ranger? did you weigh it down?

Re: How much weight do you carry in the back of your truck in the winter?
I used to drive fwd cars (2001 Escort ZX2 and 2005 Focus) before I got the ranger so they were never weighed down. Also, in my experience fresh snow (i.e. the thin layer of snow after the first few minutes) is worse than packed snow as I have done a 720 with my ZX2 driving on the highway at 30 mph during fresh snow.

Re: How much weight do you carry in the back of your truck in the winter?
spent the last 4 years in Misawa Japan 180"+ snow a year. though it was almost always wet snow not like in Denver (colder and more ice) you may be right. I always had more truble after the plows went through than before. they left a thin layer of packed snow on the road so I would try to drive where more snow had fell or where other cars had broke it up a bit when I could.

If you have the wieght, put it in. It really helps alot. The majortiy of the time you will probably be in 2wd anyhow. I only use my 4wd when I have to.

80 lbs seems insignificant.

It does make a bit of difference, I used to just throw in a few sand bags that probably added up to 80 lbs at the minimum, it worked out.

It gets cold here, I'm thinking he's somewhat close to me in the central interior. Supposed to get to -19 this week, -10 right now. Actually have a winter storm weather warning in effect, wouldn't be surprised if I wake up to a foot of snow. We get down to -40 usually around January/February for a few weeks.
