I'm looking for a 08 or 09 F-150, with the 5.4, something around the 18-24000 range. My dad did offer to sell me his 2011, but I'd like the feel of a truck that I haven't driven before, ya know?

5.4 3V is the EXACT reason why I say go 2011+. Its not the greatest engine. Also 04-08 are riddled with a few issues like Cam Phasers. I dont care what year you have, they never fixed the issue. 5.4s have exhaust manifold issues (mostly on the passenger side), drive by wire lag (which a programmer fixes), timing issues (other than cam phasers, the tensioners go out, plastic guides go bad quickly, etc...)
overall they are decent, but Ford needed a little work on them. Just make sure it doesnt remotely sound anything like a diesel, drive the 5.4 until it is at operating temp for a while, then stop or go through a dirve through (this is the best thing to do). With the window rolled down you , if you hear a chugging or knocking noise or a loud tapping other than the injectors pulsing, steer clear of the truck

There's been a few issues with the 11+ motors and the cam phasers are a hit and miss issue just like the 4.0 Sohc timing chain issue...it's was a mass produced motor so not everyone is gonna be perfect...I'd rather have a
5.4 over one of the new F150 motors

My dads 10' rarely makes the cam phaser noise. It usually makes it when the truck is warm but its cold as balls outside. The noise you hear is suppose to be the solenoids cycling due to the engine trying to most amount of torque as possible right off of idle. The 5.4 was great for what it was. I agree it wasn't the most powerful engine, but it was enough to keep the F150 the best selling truck from the late 90'a to now. My dad has almost 50k and when it does make te noise, its never louder, faster, or occurs frequently.

New 5.0 has balls. I put a K&N in my dads. And we had ford run true dual magnaflows, a leveling kit, 33's, 20" jrmotorsport rims and the wide ass fender flares on it. We looked at the raptors but they won't fit in the parking garage at work.
Hasn't had a problem yet. Got it September 2011

Neither has our 5.4. The 5.4 has got some great low end. Keeping a constant speed going up hills it never goes past 2k. And this is a full sized f150 fx4 thats fully loaded with a camper top filled with construction tools.

Re: Totalled the Ranger..
So, I went for a 2008 F-150 Supercrew Lariat. With the 5.4. I'm not too concerned about problems since my family has a small out-in-the-country dealership where we do ford certified fixes for cheap.
I bought this truck today, picking it up tommorow. 20" wheels, leather interior, sunroof, power EVERYTHING, heated seats, etc. Will post pics in a new thread in photo section later this week, when I have some free time. Only complaint I have about it is that it's cream white colored, not black, but hey, I got a good deal on it (21000 down from 24000) so I figured what the heck.

I've seen a few in that color. Not bad if you do it right. Sounds pretty sick though.

Some colors grow on you, and I am not big on black. I always not really cared for the cream white, but there is a lady near me that owns a Lincoln MKX that is very sharp. I think you made a great move.

Sucks to hear about your ranger. An F-150 is a mighty good choice for a new truck. When I bought my ranger I also got replacement insurance and since the ranger is no longer made my insurance company gives me a new F-150. Gotta love insurance when they don't screw you over that is.
