Default More Power *grunt*! (which was better?)

Okay so I really get distracted easily and I searched a few places, please don't flame me.

I am trying to figure out what I can do to get more horsepower out of the 4.0 and an Explorer's 5.0.

Supercharge is usually my first go to, but I was wondering what else there is I can do. I really would like to get my 5.0 into the 350hp range and the 4.0 somewhere in the mid 200's if possible. I presume new exhaust and superchargers are no brainers but is there anything else?

Additionally. My dad used to own a 99 3.0 Ranger. He makes the claim that they were better than the 4.0 engines. I kinda of doubt him on his knowledge since when he originally maid this claim he kept saying "4.3" which tells me he really doesn't know, but is there any stake to his claim? can anyone vouch and say that the 3.0 was a better engine than the 4.0?

So in review. What can I do to get more horsepower out of a 4.0 from a Ranger and a 5.0 from an Explorer.

and

Which was better the 3.0 or the 4.0?

I figured he probably had the 4.0 and 4.3 confused. Speaking of aftermarket support, where can I find some 4.0 power adders?

When you say reliability, how do you mean exactly? Are you saying the 4.0s break down a lot? I suppose that's what you mean, lol. I've seen that the 3.0 has better mpg, but if I was worried about mpg I'd keep the 2.3 in my '95. I don't say that like in a dickish way just the mpg aren't my primary concern.

So with that out of the way, can you guys help me out with some power adders? I've looked at things like after market throttle bodies, mass air-flow sensors, cold air intake, do those things really make that huge of a difference?

3.0 = power of a 4 banger, gas mileage of a 6 cylinder.
4.0 = power of a 6 cylinder, gas mileage of a 6 cylinder.

There is no comparison IMHO.

By the way, remember that there are two 4.0s as Stone mentioned... the OHV and the SOHC.

That's what I always thought myself but my dad can be stubborn sometimes.

So with that can I kinda get back to the main reason I posted this... and that's to figure out what I can do with bolt on power adders?

What works? what's not worth it? etc?
