lol I do the defroster thing...Idk why i do it. I turn it on to defog the windshield then leave it on for some reason
Cold car + heat = fogged windshield, but the point is to only use the defroster if you absolutely need it. I will try and start the vehicle in the winter, turn on the defroster, then scrape/brush the vehicle. When I get in the vehicle, I need the heat.

Yeah it may help mpgs at some speeds but hurt it at others. I went through drivers Ed a year and a half ago and they say that at 40 and under its better to use windows down, and anything above is better for the windows to be up w/ ac on. I like having the window cracked when I have my heater on, because after 3 minutes in my rangers heater, I can feel my eyeballs melting...

When the defroster first starts it blows cold air for a little while then its just heating my truck. The heat in my truck takes a little while to kick in but when it does

This actually works to cool the engine. I'm not sure about the MPG gain but I've used this method in emergencies when cars I've driven would overheat while driving. I would put the heater at full blast and the temperature would drop in the engine compartment, allowing me enough time to find a location to stop safely.

Um... I don't think the word aerodynamics has ever been used to describe the ranger. I think I could drive my focus around pulling a drag racing parachute and be more aerodynamic than my ranger.

LMAO same!! Ford heat is nothing to joke about!

On that note, it seems every Ford truck ive driven heats up like hell in about 5 minutes without the heat even on if the windows are up. I ALWAYS have at least my drivers side window down. Usually both to get the nice cross wind...and i have the rainguard things on my windows so even when its raining i have it open

lol true. But it's still possible to increase drag and decrease MPG (EG: spare tire on the roof, etc.).

The OPs question was about increasing MPG by having his windows down and heater on. OP is increasing his drag and is likely decreasing his MPG.

I also think having the windows down probably does more to decrease mileage due to drag than could be saved by having the engine run cooler.

Two other thoughts.
(1) The thermostat is there to regulate engine temp and keep it as constant as possible. With an engine that is overheating turning the heat on can help, but other than that can't see it doing much of anything to lower engine temps.
(2) The AC compressor runs in every setting except in the dash vent only mode.

Mythbusters tested this, as well as the tailgate myth...
You people need to get a life and stay home and watch more tv...haha lol

You want to increase your aerodynamics, get a spoiler or wing and put on the roof!! Lol.

All reality, what you're doing is just wasting heat and decreasing the life of your heater core....

In relevance to the mythbusters thing....having your tailgate down or taking it off gives you no extra MPG gain...and im pretty sure neither does any kind of tonneau cover
