If I could find approx the same year and mileage and.comparable engines..which would be a better vehicle? I am thinking about selling my Ranger and looking for a 90s Tacoma 4x4...If i can sell my Ranger for 3-4K and find a mid to late 90s Tacoma for around 4...i would really be interested. I enjoy driving my Ranger...but it is a rare case that I am not paranoif about something going wrong with it/needing work on almost a daily basis.
Thoughts on mid-late Tacomas vs. the same years of Rangers??
Preferred: big 4 cyl-small 6 cyl, 4x4 and automatic.
These are the smaller version Tacomas, before they were redesigned and made bigger

Ranger= reliable, tough, cheap to repair and own.
Tacoma= reliable, tough, expensive to repair and that year range will likely be rusted badly by now. They had huge rust issues.

ill admit, i havent seen much rust on years similar to my ranger...but i gotta say, i havent seen much on the same years of tacomas? Most of the ones ive seen are extremely clean.
edit: by the way, not saying your wrong...just saying what i personally have seen

Not EXACTLY this one, but this body style is my favorite Tacoma and what I would be looking for

Those are the only ones that survived.

Tell you the truth, id say the ranger has had the tacoma beat until the 2004 (i believe) refresh of the taco.

Do a google search for Tacoma frame rust. There are some scary vids on YouTube about it too. Toyota had huge rust issues in the 90's and early 2000's

My 97 Tacoma had zero rust.
There were issues with weak leaf springs (springs were made in mexico - go figure). Easy to fix.
Like to ranger, go with the ext cab if you can afford it.
I had the 3.4L 5 sp regular cab. The limited space was the only thing I didn't like. The thing would climb like a billy goat, I never got it stuck. Mud(REAL mud, not roadside puddles), snow, rocks, hills.
Parts are a little more expensive, but you won't be buying parts as often.
I sold it because I wanted a Jeep. This year I sold the Jeep because I missed having a pickup LoL

Thats almost exactly the body i want, i would LIKE an extended cab and automatic...but i could probably live with a regular cab if i got it for the right price
How much did you end up selling yours for?? I know Tacomas generally go for a little more than other pickups
And i would love a 3.4L....how was the MPG?
What size engine is your ranger and hows the Tacomas MPG compared to your ranger??
Sorry for the bombardment of questions lol

Re: 90s Tacoma vs 90s Ranger
I sold it for about $6k, in 2010.
I paid $6500 when I bought it in 2004.
I would have bought another tacoma this time around, but there was only one for sale within 150 miles of me, and it was way too new for my wallet. Ford was my runner-up, LoL

Re: 90s Tacoma vs 90s Ranger
Whatever you do DO NOT buy one with the 3.0 V-6 I think they quit using them in 96. They had bad head gasket problems. The 3.4 is a way better engine or the 4cyl.

Re: 90s Tacoma vs 90s Ranger
Pre 95 isn't a Tacoma, it's just a Toyota pickup. Tacoma's are 95.5 & up. And I don't think they ever offered a 3.0 in a Tacoma.
When I bought my Taco, I regularly got 27-29mpg on the highway. After 2" lift & 31" tires I got around 21. But that was when I could still find NON- ethanol fuel.

Re: 90s Tacoma vs 90s Ranger
95-04 tacos had huge frame rust problems(i used to work at a yota dealer)...its not a matter of if the frame rusts its when...but the motor will run forever
