ill never use an auto carwash again. the idiots at the local one broke the antennea on my moms expo (its motorized and goes up and down when you turn the car on/off) or used to anyway. and they put 2 huge dents in her roof rack and a 8 inch gash in clearcoat on the roof.

the snorkel of the air box- it must have hit just right and went in- my air filter was soaked and there was puddles in the bottom of the air box

I dont see it happening, the system is designed to eliminate that from happening. It should die well before there is enough water in the engine to do any damage. Im not familiar with the design of this particular air box but know the 95 it would be impossible. Do you have a picture of where the intake is and the air box itself? Now Im curious

OK That must be a factory design flaw. you should report it to FORD, It needs to be a recall item if its true!

I agree. Just don't see the wash being the cause. I've gotten water in my engine thru the intake before and all it did was kill the engine. pulled the plugs, to pump the water out, no real damage. It would take alot of water to do some damage like that. Seams like this problem would occur every time you drive in the rain too. I know there are a lot of variables, but this just seams Highly unlikely with the factory intake setup. Now if it was some kind of cold air, open element design, then I could see water getting in, but still not causing that much damage.

you guys can disagree with the man all day long but i had the same thing happen with the stock intake on my ranger in a car wash. it didnt hydrolock the motor or cause any damage thank god but it did shut the motor off and soak my filter. i dont care how much testing or engineering goes into a vehicle, there is no way to predict or guard against every variable or possibility to cause damage.
