Default 1985 Ford Ranger Timing Adjustment (Spicker and Spudder Issue)?

I'm having a problem with this vehicle and I think the timing is off first it has an eletrical control module on the side of the distributor thus do I just loosen it and spin it to adjust or is it electrically set, basically the truck is spiting and splating you hit the gas and some times it takes of fine other times it sputters for a few seconds and then it gives a sudden burst of throttle sometimes at an idle the rpms idle at about 1200 but it will bounce up and down between 400 and 1200 other times it will sit steady at 750 I also have been told there might be a fuel issue maybe a fuel filter IDK any suggestions its a 2.3 2wd engine

Sound like the EGR valve is leaking. It's not the timing.

sounds like a air leak, if its carburated, go to the parts store, buy ya a can of starting fluid, start it, and spray that starting fluid at the base of the carb, u'll hear a change of idle, if u hear a change, the base gasket under the carb is leaking, u can also use this on your air lines, just spray down the lines (1 at a time), and if u hear a change in idle, that hose is leaking, replace it, and u should be ready to go!
