How much worse is gas mileage when driviing in 4x4
I was curious what's the fuel difference between driving in rwd and 4x4 like, I haven't used mine enough yet to tell!?

If you're using your 4x4 enough to tell a difference in your mpg, you're using it too much, IMO. I only use mine when i feel im about to get stuck, or when I KNOW I wont make it through in 2wd. The farthest ive ever driven in 4x4 was about a mile, and that was some serious off-roading (not in the ranger).

Re: How much worse is gas mileage when driviing in 4x4
ive used 4x4 for a long distance. bout 30 miles.
MPG drops. how much will depend on how fast you're going, what type of terrain, etc. just like it does in 2wd.

If you're in conditions that require 4wd, then the MPG you're getting at the time is and will be the least of your worries.

My trucks in 4x4 most of the winter, I see no measurable drop in mileage.

Re: How much worse is gas mileage when driviing in 4x4
^^ To that point, neither do I. What causes the big drop people see in MPG is HOW you drive. Off-roading and driving in a massive blizzard is very inefficient, with or without 4wd.

Re: How much worse is gas mileage when driviing in 4x4
4x4 just to get to work, not much difference, but 4x4 round the farm and off road 9mpg x.x
All depends on how you drive and low range will kill your fuel mileage, pushing 3-4 foot of snow dose not help either ^^

Yup. I drive in blizzards several times a year, in 2wd most of the time, and I can definitely see the mileage drop.
I can't see using my 4x4 for driving any kind of distance. It's just too rough on the truck. The previous owner of my Chevy kept it in 4wd most of the winter and by the time I got it, there was a horrible clunk coming from the front end. 2 CV axles later it was still doing it so I had a mechanic tear into the transfer case. $1200 worth of damages. All from low speed driving around a small city in 4x4.
IMO, 4x4 is for when your stuck, or about to get stuck. If you're going to be driving in snow, you should learn to do it in 2wd.

Too rough on the truck? You are sadly mistaken, these trucks are designed to be driven in 4x4, Ive never had any issue driving any distance in 4x4. Also comparing the Rangers 4x4 system to your chevy is a mute point. GM trucks are fairly well known for having 4x4 issues, especially with the transfer cases. Most cases when you realize you should have been in 4x4 its usually too late. I bought a 4x4 and I use it.

X2
That's the only part I like about winter, the rare occasion I can use my 4 wheel drive.

Re: How much worse is gas mileage when driviing in 4x4
Also, if you're driving around in 4wd "because it is winter", you're in an idiot. It should only be engaged in conditions that warrant the extra drive traction. Using 4wd on dry pavement WILL wreck your shit.

X2
The only time I needed 4x4 for any amount of distance was when the highway had 10" of rutted up snow. Only way I could make it to work.
I see people using it when there's only blowing snow. I just laugh.
