I just changed the oil for the first time in my 09 6cylinder Ranger. I am disappointed that it seemed not so user friendly under the truck. The oil drain seemed to be right where it dripped on a frame member or something and then splashed all over the place. Couple that with the fact I couldn't get the oil filter off and I am disgusted. I will buy a diffeent type of filter wrench before attempting to do the job again, but I may just take it ti the dealer and get it done. They really aren't charging a whole lot more than I can buy the parts for, and I wouldn't have the frustration.

do you have a 3.0 or 4.0.

I hated changing my 3.0 because you couldn't get to anything but it is a breeze in my 4.0. No problem getting the filter or anything

i've got the Lima 2.3.......not sure of the v-6s, never attempted it.

gotta be the easiest vehicle to change oil in.

with the bigger tires, i don't even need ramps anymore....i slide in, unscrew the plug and filter...let it all drain....replace plug and filter and pour in the new stuff
i can be done within 15 min.....10 if i hurry

If you ever wanna change oil in a 06 beetle let me know. Your ranger will be a breeze compared to the beetle

i change mine all the time. i can do it in about 6 minutes now with no problems. just have to get use to getting the filter off behind the lower arm on my '04 it's nice that it's down by the pan now.

First of all, don't put the oil filter on ******* tight and you won't need the wrench. It was only hard to get off this time because it was put on by the factory. All of them are like that the first time. As for where the drain plug is, it's in a great location on my 4.0L. I can change my oil in about 10 minutes. There's nothing to it.

i have an 04 3.0 i have great access to the drain plug, it's the filter that's a pain. but because i have small arms and hands i can fit into the area better than say my b/f. i just don't have the strength sometimes to get it off by myself.

I always change my own, but I just got this truck. Anyone know how much oil the 2.5 holds? I looked at the filter and its TINY.

Ive never not changed my own oil in 34 years of driving. This truck is a breeze compared to some. I never use a wrench but an old leather women's belt, it grips as it stretches and spins them right off every time. Like this



as for oil going everywhere I place a piece of card board bent to direct the flow into my container

Man it takes ya'll 10 minutes to change your oil? It takes me about 2-3 hours. It's like the closest thing to making love to my truck, almost like a religious experience. Plus each step requires atleast a beer or two. FTW the 4.0 has to be the easiest vehicle to change the oil in.

mine is a breeze its on 07 3.slow and under the filter it has a funnel and it takes longer to drain the oil than it does to get to the plug and filter

Did my tonight for the first time... filter was pretty easy to get loosened going from the top using a belt. Standard oil wrench or the cap kind that goes over the end would never work. Spun it off dropped it to the ground and spun the new one one on with a half turn too make it snug. Oil pan plug was a breeze to get from the bottom of the truck.


question for those in the know... I ran into something that broke apart as soon as i touched it. Made of plastic.. looks like an old funnel.. on closer inspection, it looks like it may have been mounted to the engine below the filter? Might have just been an old one someone used, but something about the shape tells me it may not be. Figured it was worth asking about.
