Default what's this thing

I posted this in the general discussion, and I'll try here as well.

What's the ball looking thing underneath the air filter on a '97 2wd? I was changing the heater control valve, when I bumped what looks like a vacuum line from the "ball" to what appears to be the distributor, and it's dry rotted and it cracked, so of course I think it needs replacing. Any help for this noobie is much appreciated.

Thanks; is it just a regular vacuum line that runs from the canister to the distributor? It didn't look like a regular vacuum line connection to me, that's what really had me confused. Any help would be appreciated.
