Default engine noise in 1st and 2nd gears

I have a 2001 Ranger 4 cylinder 5 speed (86k miles). The engine has started making a noise--a deep low rumbling or groaning of sorts--when I give it gas in 1st and 2nd gears. The noise, however, is not always present--only sometimes. Any thoughts?

There is no loss of power. It performs just fine. Now I'm thinking maybe it's a gasket at a pipe joint or exhaust manifold: perhaps a gasket separates and forms a leak when the engine shifts as I accelerate. (The engine wouldn't shift as much in the higher gears.) Does that seem right? Any other ideas?
