Welp I ended up replacing my TPS sensor in my 2.3L since it was recommended that it causes the transmission to lock/unlock on highway speeds if it's going bad or flaky. (main issue was that it was causing a possible pending CEL at first) Which I can 100% confirm it was doing for YEARS and just always thought it was because I had larger tires so it had trouble going in or staying in overdrive. Now I know it was the damn TPS sensor.

Prior to that I would say I got 23mpg on solid highway driving. After replacing the tps sensor I now get almost 27mpg. I get 100miles to the tank per quarter on the gauge cluster. w00t w00t! I wish I would have replaced this sooner.

My truck feels completely different driving on the highway and the RPM's not going up and down all the time.

after just finishing up with fresh fluids all around, including diff, tranny, p/s, brakes, coolant, clutch, engine oil... my highway mileage just bumped back up to nearly 27mpg, that was a pleasant surprise!

I bought a '98 2.5 about two weeks ago, and so far I've averaged 25mpg. I usually drive 50/50 city and highway. I have definitely been impressed with my little truck so far!

I live in south Florida and have a 2010 2.3 auto with no mods other than 235 Michelins (stock tires are 225) and I only get 20mpg - bought it new and used to get 21-22 with the stock tires. My mileage doesn’t change over the course of the year yet my driving habits don’t change and the A/C is off most of the time from December to May (it’s on nonstop from May to October.) I drive about 50/50 city/highway and average 12k/year. I would love to get 25 like some guys are getting but my truck didn’t get close to that when it was brand new! I drive easy too. Any tips?

Tip is, don't believe every thing you read. I have a 2001 4.0 4x4, 4 door, with a topper and I have had 5 different sets of tire sizes, 4 different types of spark plug set at different gaps, intake mods, filter box mods, cable tie this, cable tie that, and it get 14.5 mpg, with air, without air, towing a trailer, not towing a trailer. Best it has aver got driving like an ole lady with a feather hat on non-alcohol gas is 16 mpg. I would consider paying some one that claims they get 25 and 30 with the same set up. I live in Central FL

Yup.

If you had a Ranger with small skinny street tires and a front valence/air dam you might improve mileage by 1 to 3 mpg. But the basic aerodynamics (or lack thereof) and drivetrain of the 4.0 4x4 essentially limit the upside of the MPG.

With a 4.0 4x4 running 31" factory BFG KO's on factory Alcoa wheels and all completely bone stock, I get 14 to 15 mpg on the highway.

On my 2015 F-150 (3.5 EcoBoost, 2WD) with factory street tires and front air dam I average 21 mpg on the highway. Removing the air dam dropped the mileage by 1 to 2 MPG. My buddy with the same truck went to slightly larger BFG AT/KO tires and removed the front air dam. His avg. mileage dropped about 3 to 4 MPG (adjusted for larger tire diameter).

People throw 33" mudders on their truck and wonder why their mileage goes down so much... its called "friction". Friction from wind resistance and friction from putting power to the road.

I'm around 18 overall, probably 70/30 hwy/city driving with my 98 4.0 auto 2wd.

Shit...I'm on E @ 155 miles. '86, 2.9L V6, 5speed, 4x4. Exhaust pretty much ends at the cat. Left my headlights on for 3 hours last night, killed the shitty battery. No gas in the big Ford(my gal's '97 F150 w/5.4L Triton V8...stepside ), sooo I'm gonna have to figure shit out, TODAY. The truck IS in pretty damn good SHAPE for an '86, and indeed has a new motor, but I think everything else is toast and needs immediate rectification. I think one of the first major upgrades to the the truck will be not only digital gauges, but a little sensor-device thingy that is able to tell you how much fuel you've got left proper. I'm a simple guy and wanna keep this as stock as possible(or at least make it LOOK as stock as possible giggity), but that seems like a practical, sensible upgrade. Welp. Wish me luck!

12-16 so far since the V8 swap. Not bad with 33's and a lift, I suppose.
