Default Does Octane matter?

I have a 1999 3.0 FFV. Owners manual states that it has 160 HP running on E85 fuel. What would the HP difference be running on 87 or higher fuel?

Ethanol has a higher energy content than gasoline so you have more hp with E85. Couldnt tell you off the top of my head how much less you will have with 87 octane gasoline.

The only fuel your engine is designed for is 87 octane normal gas or E85 Ethanol. Nothing else. Higher octane gas is for higher compression engines.

Yeah forget the power increase part too. Im not really sure about that. Also, you will get better gas mileage with gasoline.

Because gasoline has a higher energy content.

I occasionally get a ping with 87 oct. so I usually run 89 or better just to eliminate the ping. Prob just me - but it doesn't run smoother, with better throttle response with a higher oct.

E85 has a lower energy level but significantly higher octane level. Which is why people tune with it on their turbo cars-- higher boost capability

For your truck, the ONLY difference in going to higher octane would be in the lightness of your wallet.

Maybe someone can explain why with 87 it pings. Yet with 89 or 91 it doesn't. That's worth the extra pennies to me.

if you can find somewhere that has 100% gas instead of 10% eth you will get better gas mi and your truck will run better. I get about 425 mi on a tank of 100% and 375 with 10% eth. that's with a 4.0 ltr engine.

Timing? Carbon build up? Something is wrong causing it ping. Using 89 hides the problem. I would try some seafoam treatments.

I've use it in the gas tank. But I still have a few thousand miles left on the oil so I was going to wait till I was ready to change it before I did a seafoam treatment.

I'm a tad concerned about doing a seafoam thru the engine. I've hard it causes oil leaks and such.
