Question Does a ford ranger need a CHIP key?

I just got my ranger about 4 weeks ago and it only came with one key and it appears to be a chip key and i dont feel like payin $50 to $100 for a key also if this matters it is a 1999.
Thanks,
deerhunterJLW

If you have a chip key which is a key with a larger black portion that is thick on top then yes you will need one to start the truck. You can get a regular key for the doors though

The name for it is "transponder key", BTW.

When I got my truck it only have one key, it wasn't even the original Ford key but it works. I went to a local key maker and got a regular metal key just for the doors if I ever get locked out. I think it was $6.

Well, I tried to take my key to get another one made, but that couldn't do it...this is because
My key has a black grip on it with a ford emblem and they said underneath the grip is a chip. soo yea they have chips unless they do r have those big grips

----------

I tried to get a second key made but they couldn't do it because my key has a black grip on top with faked emblem, so they said there is a chip underneath it

My truck had the same, what I did was remove the receiver from around the ignition. Get a regular key made, and take the "chip" key and tape it to the receiver and tuck it under the dash. Now I can start the truck with a regular key. I know its ghetto but no way am I paying 100+ for a key on a 13 year old truck!

I personally value my vehicle and my possessions in it, so I'm all for the transponder key.

I feel lucky to have one of the older steel cut keys. I can go to lowes and get a copy made for $3 and it works perfectly.

yes, and its EFFING ANNOYING.
My truck wouldn't start one time and I couldn't figure it out. We tried replacing the fuel filter and couldn't think of what it was. Finally figured out it was a bad chip key...it wore out from being used so much that the code wasnt being sent to the ignition correctly. It would shut my engine off and then restrict it from starting again. P.I.T.A.

$25 to cut at a Ford Dealer, then $75 to program it.

ACE Hardware makes chip keys now...its like $2 for the key, but then like $100 to program...unless you know someone who works there...that helped...

Good point! Rangers are near the bottom of the most stolen list.

When you try and start the truck, the fuel pump not engaging is a dead giveaway. $100 is just nuts.
