Default Buying first Ranger and have questions

I was interested in a Ranger I saw a t a local used car lot. It is a 2001 Reg. Cab 5 speed with the 2.5L Fleetside bed. I was wondering what were the capabilities of the 2.5L? How much would I be able to pull or haul? I know the 5 speed helps with towing, but I just have my doubts about a tiny 2.5L inline 4. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!!
Zach

I don't know what ur budget is, but I would look for a 4.0 V6 supercab 4X4. You would love it!! I went from a 94 2.3 I4 to the 4.0 V6 and absolutely love it. But again, I dk what ur budget is. How much are they wanting for the truck?

hi Zach. Welcome.

Honestly, look for a 01+ 2.3L 4banger. You'll be much happier with it's output. I used to have a 2.5L '01 and it just wasn't much at all in the power department, at least for me. The power difference between the two is night and day...espicially with a manual. If you're wanting to haul, I'd suggest a different engine all together...different tranny too. I suggest, depending on your budget, getting an older 4.0(98-00) with an auto. I don't tow much at all with the Ranger but have in plenty of old jobs and these manual trannys aren't too much up for the task. Both the clutch components and the trans itself is just weak. The auto is alot stronger of an option. Of course, if it's just a light utility trailer, that's not a problem at all for even the 2.5 5spd.

Well I don't really tow a whole lot of anything anymore. The problem is that right now I drive a Suburban and I will be going away to college next semester. I can't drive the burban in a college town cuz its just too damn big. The biggest thing I will really haul now is probably my motorcycle(roughly 600-700 lbs). I'm really not a big Ford fan, but I like the Rangers and anything is better than a Dodge(except them Jap cars and trucks). I appreciate all the feedback.

Yeah man....We hear alot of differing "hauling" needs so it's hard to gauge. After your last post, yeah dude....Ranger is totally fine for you. Even a 2.5 5spd. I still think you'd enjoy the 01+ 2.3 more though. Maybe find both and test drive both to see how you'd like both of them. The 4banger rangers are nice and very economical too. The 2.5 a little more fuel efficient, but the 2.3 is alot funner to drive.

Thanks Fx4.

The Ranger has 144,000 on the clock and the dealer is asking $3250. I figured it would be almost a straight up trade. I would hate to give up the 4wd though.

What usually needs to be replaced by 150,000 miles on these trucks? Do you guys think this is a good price??
