First of all, I have an Fx4 Off-Road level 1 Ranger, and I'm just wondering what exactly is so special about the Fx4. as (for some reason) it's fairly difficult to find actual specs for the 2003 online The truck handles amazingly offroad, and I'm not sure if that's just a Ranger thing or if it's the Fx4.
Next, I've seen a lot of places say that the 2003 Fx4 only has the limited slip diff, but mine has an open diff. Is the limited slip only just a common misconception?

it should have limited slip, but it may not you never know what a previous owner did, ive seen owners make there truck look like better optioned trucks replace stickers to make them look like FX4s when they are not etc. or change out the rear end with something that works instead of what it should have..... best way to get your info is to decipher the vin number, or swing by a ford dealership and have service or parts pull a build type sheet it will show what options it had.. all the 4x4s will handle the same off road because the suspension is the same. Just options are different such as fx4 level twos come with torsen limited slip instead of ford trac lock which is on the fx4s level twos have blisten shocks instead of ford shocks on the fx4s.

also if your gauge cluster is silver and black then it should be a FX4

The 03 level one as you say are the equivalent of a 2002 4x4 XLT And it probably has a clutch oriented L/S unlike the torsion found in the 2002 FX4 and 2003 Level II. In 2002-2003 the ranger Fx4 package setup was really strange and it wasn't really "recorded" well. Just like the rare twin stick setups that were on the 02 fx4 and 03 lvlII and the fancy tow hooks and other things that most people thought were aftermarket.

And that really depends on weather or not you have the different torsion bar stiffness. I think 1 is the stiffest which came stock on lvII's and sometimes came on 03+ fx4's.

I read up a little more, and I do indeed have a limited slip differential. Sorry for the ignorance...
Also, it most definately is Fx4, because the previous owner was a bit of an idiot who didn't know that putting boards on the roof without putting something inbetween would do a massive amount of paint damage (it knocked $300 off of the price when we noticed it). They also messed up the rubber seal on the sliding back window by putting boards through it...all of this meaning that I doubt they knew much of anything about vehicles, or would want to make their truck look like an Fx4. Judge for yourself in the pics...
