Which truck is better, Chevy S10 or Ford Ranger?
I want to get a small truck, from the 90s, with around 100k miles on it. I'm looking at either a Chevy S10 or a Ford Ranger. I know they will both last a while. Which one do you think will hold up better?
I also plan on getting a manual, and possibly a 4x4. And I live in the Midwest, North of Chicago. So snow and rust is an issue.

why are these guys even on the ranger site? ^^^ go with a ranger. mine has 155000 miles and still running strong. every s10 ive seen has major issues just after(or before) 100k miles. plus they look stupid.

well all i have to say is maintenance, and chevy's have 4x4 issues all the time, something to do with the t-case engagement... AND if you ever want to lift a chevy you sure better be ready to open your wallet cause they all have IFS and is EXPENSIVE to lift. Rangers are cheaper, and my ranger recently got 20 mpg and its a 4.0L with an auto and 4" lift with 31" tires EAT THAT CHEVY!

S10s rust out faster, pluse they have IFS which is expensive to lift and easy to brake. the rangers TTB kicks ass but is easy to do a SAS on. and all motors offerd on with the rangers: 2.0, 2.3, 2.8, 2.9, 3.0, 4.0 will last forever if taken care of, and you can beat the crap out ranger and it'll will take it.

Def go with a Ranger. Mods are CHEAPER. Chevy is too expensive and too much hassle.
But um...why are you on a Ranger forum asking if a Chevy would be better than a Ford, anyhow???? You know what 90% of us are going to say.....

What kind of mods are you thinking and what years? I actually have a friend who spent $5,000 on a 6" lift for a chevy... a fabtech so i don't think you can mod a chevy for cheaper, but hey thats on what i've heard from my buddy who is a die-hard chevy fan!
For reliability, i'll be frank, if you do the maintenance on any rig, they will last well into 200,000 plus miles. Many people just assume that(for instance) a geo metro is a P.O.S. when in fact it has the exact same motor as the toyota corolla. Just a thought, i just prefer rangers cause mine has a decent sized motor, good stock axles, reliable, if driven correctly they get pretty decent mileage. Also, i like the capabilities that it has off-road with regards to turning radius and such as it is a smaller truck
But once again, everything is opinion, and which is based off our own experience and i've had a good experience with my ranger

i was just speaking about aftermarket in general, mid 90's to present. i do agree with the maintinance thing, but iv just heard of alot of things going wrong with the electrical systems in s-10's, but i have never owned one myself.

either way the Ranger also looks better than the S10 especially the 2001-2004 range. Those are the best

If i can put my two sence in...........I have 2001 XLT and i have 271,and change on her and had NO problems with it. Now when it comes to lowering a s-10 or a ranger the s-10 is going to be cheaper then the ranger will be. But as you said, you live up north in the snow and you wanted to go up.........not down.

I have owned both .. fords by far have lasted Me longer the 4x4 chevs have HUGE ball joint issues as well as the tranny My uncle has owned a speed shop for years and a rule of thumb is when you build ford power you will not see it back for a long time .. where as chevy power he typically saw the motors back every 3-4 years for a " freshing" IE: valve seals, rings and well your in there the berrings ...my old 327 was rebilt a few times where my fathers 302 and 292 that were rebuilt at the same time have not had to been touched and he drives his trucks alot harder then Me being that he has a very long commuite... chevys have more aftermarket stuff available and yes some is cheaper .. but does buying cheap get you anywhere .. other then buying the part again down the road ... when buying compareable parts .. ford and chev are pretty close .. but like anything .. some stuff is cheaper and soem is more expensive .. thus evening it self out hope this helps
