hey everybody I have read many different myths and stories about oil filters, i wanted to know what you guys thought about oil filters and what kind you use? i use Wix fliters, but my dad has used Fram filters for years and never had a problem when i have heard they were the worst things ever made

I mainly stick with Motorcraft, but sometimes I'll pickup the Purolator PureONE filters when they are cheaper. One things for sure, I avoid FRAM based solely on all the bad things I've heard about their filters.

My parents run Fram because they're cheap and available just about everywhere. But I too have read the bad things and seen the tests. I wouldn't run 'em even though I did at one point. Not hatin' on you OP...you can run whatever filter you want to.


I run K&N Gold Filter on my Ranger since it's first oil change with me. Little on the spendy side but the materials and anti-drainback and what I've read about them is good. And...they last a really long time. Perfect for running synthetic where the cheaper filters you'd have to swap out midway through the oils life. Oil, I run Royal Purple 5w30 year round or Mobil1 0w30 in the winter for it's warming up faster properties.

I hate using cheep oil filters i used a Fram filter 1 time and i hand tightened it but when i went to change it out to my motocraft that thing was tight as crap.

I have read that some Ranger guys have had oil pressure problems with Fram filters. No personal experience with Fram on my Ranger, though.

I use Motorcraft. Cheap, recommended by Ford, and they work fine. There's no need for me to mess with what works.

i used to use quakerstate but they shortend the filter so i switched to fram

Mobil-1 filters for my Mustang & Ranger. My 2nd choice would be Motorcraft, which is also an excellent filter.

I've used Fram filters for years, but a couple of months ago, I developed an oil leak. Turned out that the filter's rubber gasket was leaking. Changed the filter and oil and the leak stopped, and put on a Purolator. Don't know if I'll go back to Fram or not.

I've used all the above, and have never had problems. So . . . I guess it's a preference thing.

I mentioned in another thread that I got the Mobil 1 filter in the AdvanceAuto deal and a few people said they didn't perform as well, or more importantly last as long, as other synthetic filters . If I'm not thrilled with the Mobil 1 filter and oil, I think I'm going to switch to RP oil and filter.

I quit useing fram I cut fram oil filters open compared them with k&n puralator gold the filter paper was much longer than fram I wont use fram again

i have an issue w/ 2001, 4L v6.
random missing feeling during normal travel. this has been going on for the past three winters. this happens only in cold weather. i thought bad gas!, don't know. it hits pretty hard, like a misfire but hits w/ a slug feeling. never in warm weather. this eng. has tuned port inj. correct? so if a slug of water from the tank went through to one cylinder would i feel that hit. doesn't idle funny or appear to be missing at idle. only random slugs at normal operating temps and speeds. in four wheel or only in two.

I have cut several oil fiters open, Fram wix, and napa gold amoung them.
fram is just junk.. cardboard end caps, about half the filter area, the bypass valve is a piece of tin.

wix and Napa gold are the same, (wix makes the Napa gold)
