Default 2000 4x4 supercab-Should I buy?

So Im truckless. I need to get one before next fire season to get my motorcycle and stuff up to montana. I found a 2000 4x4 supercab ranger with 141,000 on craigslist for 4500 and have been seriously considering it. Its a 3.0 v6, 5 speed and has a bed liner and toolbox. Its oil was changed every 3,000 miles, with records to back up the claims. Now I've read up on the '98-'00 and heard they have problems with the 4x4. Now Im pretty good with motorcycles (engine wise) and very mechanically able so you think this truck is for me? Its about 700 under KBB so theres lots of interest. Plus the new BFG tires arn't helping scare away the other people...

So in summary I need a truck to move cross country, plus play in the mountains, and I dont want to buy a new truck for a LONG time. Sorry for the lack of knowledge on my part but I think this is the right place to ask. Any input is much appreciated!

Sounds like a good deal to me. In my neck of the woods an old 4x is a grand.

Sounds like a good buy what is the exterior/interior condition?

The 4wd problem is a easy fix for these trucks

The interior is very nice but the exterior is just good, no dents but some scratches. How long do these trucks last before a major overhaul? I know that the regular rangers last about 300,000+ miles but how about the 4x4's? With 150,000 miles coming up, is there anything thats bound to happen soon? Would I be better off with a 4x2 since Im not doing any serious off roading?

If your not ever gonna off road it then I would say 2wd.
A truck will last for ever if some one takes care of it.

A 4wd lasting longer than a 2wd I could see happening. 4wd is usually gonna get punished more than a 2wd.

Well . . .for what it's worth it's worth I have a 92! it's got 150K plus. mechanically it runs great, but exterior and some interior it looks like a work truck. If I had the money I would overhaul it body in and out but I don't. It used to be my dads til he got his F150. I can't complain. I just used it the other day to get out some snow banks and some slippery road which PennDot hadn't plowed yet, so the 4x4 came in handy.

I've got an 02 4x4 4.0 auto that is knocking on 150k with NO problems. I have done simple maint. on it sinc I got it a year ago, along with a fan clutch. I see this truck lasting at least another 150k. I don't off road mine, just use the 4x4 to crawl up river banks from canoeing. So in that aspect I've never had a prob with the 4x4.
Sounds like a deal seeing how I paid 7500 for mine, in like new condition.

Well Im sure I couldnt resist the temptation of the beautiful mountain roads in montana so the 4x4 may be used.

If the price is right for you, I'd grab it.

Take it from the kid living in Montana. You want 4x4, it makes life ten times easier. you can get by with 2wd but the 4x4 makes it way better. I just drove home for the holidays to Washington and it was a bear. I spent most of the mountains creeping because you couldn't see because of snow, luckily it wasn't icy really, but I have needed it in the passes before. The 3.0 in the mountains is kinda gutless to but it will get you by. My buddy here has an older 3.0 4x4 Ranger and it can't even begin to keep up with the 4.0 in mine. But the truck you're looking at looks like a great find. I'd look into it.

Where are you looking at living in Montana? Oh and put a block heater in whatever you end up getting, mine starts every day even at 40 below, but it's not a pretty sound if you don't plug her in.

Well to tell you the truth, where ever BLM puts me. Im hoping Zortman or Missoula. I know for sure that Im not gonna get a job in red lodge or West yellowstone, where I really want to work, but its a tough pick there. Plus if theres no offers in montana I applied to lots of places in alaska, which Im thinking the 4x4 would be needed.

Now lets talk about gas mileage. How much does the 4x4 eat up in 2wd on the highway.

I get about 18 in mine running 70 to 75 which is most of the interstate speeds in Montana. I have pulled 23 doing 60ish on the back 2 lane highways. That was with a moderate load to. But I also have the 4.0 not the 3.0
